Activities
galore for EEE freshmen during Orientation Week in April 2007
Some
1100 new students to the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering
started their orientation programme on the morning of 9th April
2007.
Coming from
six different diplomas courses, the students were welcomed by
Dr Dave Chong, Director of the School of EEE at SP Convention
Centre. They were also briefed by representatives from the Student
and Alumni Affairs Department, Library, Students’ Union
and by the School’s IT chairman.
During the
course of the week, these freshmen were taken through programmes
that would help them get to know the campus and their classmates
better. This way, the new students would be able to settle down
quickly. Seniors and alumni of the School were also involved in
the orientation. They served as tour leaders as well as game facilitators
for the ice-breaking and team building games.
Each
class also selected their class leaders and assistants during the
Glimpse of Life in SP workshop. They were also briefed about the
Personal Tutor Network, disciplinary rules, important information
about financial assistance programmes and other “survival
skills”.
Each
of the six diploma course management teams also conducted their
own Induction Programme for the freshmen, specific to the area of
interest of the diploma course.
For example, students from the Diploma in Electronics and Communication
Engineering (DEC) were taught how to secure their home wireless
network from outsiders accessing their network illegally. They also
attended talks and demos on radio transmission which were conducted
by staff as well as speakers from industry. Students from the Diploma
of Electrical & Electronic Engineering were treated to an interactive
live show on the wonders of electricity and electronics. They also
built their own mini solar cars and pitted these in exciting races.
Other students took part in activities in the laboratories, LAN
gaming and aircraft assembly and flying.
To
cap an exciting week, on 12th April, together with about 4000 other
SP freshmen, the EEE freshmen participated in the SP Flag Day in
support of the President Challenge Charity 2007. Each EEE class
group was accompanied by a senior student who imparted some of the
finer skills of fund raising. The enthusiastic freshmen raised a
record of $34,449.30.
