Figments Vol 12 - Seize the Day
Foreword

“That’s hot!”, our theme for last year’s Creative Writing Competition has yielded a wide range of interpretations of  “hot” – ranging from the conventional (hot chilli) and the sensual (hot hips and lips) to the mundane (hot pavements), including, not surprisingly (a reflection of our difficult and belligerent times), the ‘hotness’ as heat coming from fires, volcanic eruptions and war.

The organising committee is especially pleased to have many entries from secondary schools last year (a total of 577 entries, compared to the previous year’s 284 entries). However, we did not manage to get as many entries for the polytechnic category as we would have desired. We had to settle for two second-prize winners instead as we could not find a first-prize winner for the ‘Short Story’ category.

Indeed, Figments has come a long way since it was first published in 1989 when it consisted of a small collection of winning entries of short poems and short stories submitted only by Singapore Polytechnic students. Along the way we have included secondary school students, and two years ago, we opened the competition to other polytechnics as well.

I would like to express my deepest thanks to everyone involved in this Creative Writing Competition, especially:

  • Mrs Lam Yoke Peng (Director, Language and Communication Department)

  • Ms Renee Tan (Section Head In-Charge)

  • Ms Chng Suan Tze (Team Leader In-Charge)

  • Ms Tan Peng Peng who offered great help and advice

  • Teachers and students from participating educational institutions

  • LC lecturers who helped publicise the competition and shortlist the entries

  • Ms Lily Leong and Ms Lee Sher Lin who helped with judging and editing

  • Mr Arnold Wee and SP student Tan Gang Hoe who helped with the artwork

  • Ms Mak Mei Yoke who helped with administrative matters
