Guidelines / Requirements

1.      GEMs are applicable to all full time Year 1 students admitted prior to AY2011 and Year 2 direct-entry students admitted in or before AY2011.

2.       The norm is to take 1 GEM per semester, starting from Year 1 Semester 2 to Year 3 Semester 1.

3.       GEMs are organised into 3 clusters:

a.       Arts & Humanities

b.       Business & Management

c.       Science & Technology

4.       To graduate, you are required to complete:

a.      3 GEMs, with one GEM from each cluster,  in your 3-year course of study (effective AY2008 cohort onwards); OR

b.       2 GEMs, one each from the Arts & Business clusters, if you are taking DNS course

5.       GEMs registration will be held one or two weeks before the start of a new semester.

6.       If you have to repeat core modules, have failed GEM or are a Year 2 direct entry student, please consult your school on the number of GEM you are required to register prior to your GEM main registration appointment.

7.     You are only allowed to select GEMs from a list of GEMs approved your course. This is to prevent you from registering a GEM whose content you may already have learnt in your own course of study. It is your responsibility to ensure that the GEM(s) you have taken, whether you have self-registered or assigned to you by GEM Unit, is approved for your course. Otherwise the GEMs you have completed may not be counted in your academic progression.    >>> See List of GEMs approved for your course

8.       GEMs generally do not have pre-requisites and are general enough for any student of any course and any year of study to take. You may take the GEMs in any order.

9.   All GEMs will be 30 hours in duration (2 hrs per week x 15 weeks).

10.   All GEMs will be assessed by continuous assessment. There will be no semestral exam.

11. GEM results will be graded and reflected in transcripts. Grades obtained will not be included in the GPA computation effective AY2008 cohort onwards.

12.   A student who fails GEM may take the same GEM again in subsequent semesters or take a different GEM. A student who fails the same GEM twice will be removed from the course

Aims

The objective of having general elective modules is to broaden your educational experience by:

  1. requiring you to take modules outside your field of study, and

  2. providing you with opportunities for interacting with students having different perspectives, backgrounds and areas of study.

GEMs are as important as any core module of the course. Failing a GEM may affect your graduation i.e. delay in graduation.
