Frequently Asked Questions + Answers

What are GEMs?

GEMs are general elective modules and are organised into three clusters:

(a) Arts & Humanities

(b) Business & Management

(c) Science & Technology

Why do I have to do GEMs?

GEMs broaden your educational experience and provide you with the opportunities to interact with other students having different perspectives, background and areas of study.

How many GEMs should I take?

You are normally required to take 3 or 4 GEMs with the requirement of at least one GEM in each of the three clusters. You will take GEMs from the second semester of the first year of studies onwards and complete them before you begin the final semester of your three-year full-time diploma course

Why I cannot see some of the GEM classes when I am registering in SAS, but they are listed in the GEM website?

You will not be able to view modules that are blocked for your course and GEM classes allocated to timeslots for other grouping . Classes timetabled on Mon (group1), Tue (group2) & Thu (group3) are independent slots, and Wed & Fri are common for all students.

Are GEMs compulsory?

Yes, all full-time diploma students who enrolled on Jul 2004 onwards are required to take 2 or 3 or 4 GEMs. Students with outstanding GEM in the 3rd year of study and who did not register during the registration period may be allocated a GEM class, as recommended by the academic school.

How are GEMs assessed?

GEMs are 100% in-course modules with no semestral examination.

How can I register for GEMs?

Registration is done through the Internet. Use Internet Explorer browser Only. You can do it anywhere as long as you have access to the Internet. At your appointed registration date and time, you will have to login to Student Portal : Go to e-Services, Registration - Add/drop module and register your GEM.

When can I register for GEMs?

GEMs registration is done during the long vacation, usually one or two weeks before the start of the new Semester. Please return to this website (http://www.sp.edu.sg/gems) before your long vacation to find out when GEMs registration will take place.

Nearer to the registration date, we will send you an email to remind you of your GEMs registration. You have to login to Student Portal: Go to e-Services, Registration – Check Appointment to view the dates and times of your registration appointments after receiving the reminder.

Please note that you will only be able to register for GEM during your appointed dates and times and registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

How would I know if my registration is successful?

Check your timetable to confirm if your GEM registration is successful. The GEM class you have registered should appear in your time-table. Students whose registrations are unsuccessful or are affected by class closure (due to insufficient number of students) will be informed via email before the Final Registration. These students can then register for GEMs during their appointment in the Final Registration.

Can I make changes to my registered GEM class?

Changing your registered GEM class is subject to seats availability. You may risk losing your registered GEM class when attempting to make changes.

You are allowed to change your registered GEM class during your appointments in the Main and Open Registrations but not in your Final Registration.

Are the seats fairly allocated to each appointment in the Main Registration?

The number of seats to be offered is fairly distributed among all 1st appointments. Students with earlier 1st appointment do not have an advantage over those with later appointment. You can expect 1 or 2 seats for classes on Wed and Fri which are the common slots for all students.
Click here to find out more about how appointments are assigned and seats are distributed.

How much time will I spend on GEMs?

The duration of each GEM is 2 hours per week. Total of 30 hours per semester.
