KEY TARGETS - ENVIRONMENT
WASTEWATER
Environmental impact
Potential contamination of public sewer and drainage systems which can harm flora and fauna, if trade effluent contents exceed legal limits. Part of Singapore Polytechnic (SP) lies within the controlled watercourse and potential harmful discharge is a significant aspect.
Performance Status
Concentrated waste chemicals are collected and disposed as toxic waste, only rinse water and neutralised chemicals are allowed to pass through dilution facilities. All chemical labs are equipped with dilution facilities and students are taught to use the facilities and the implication of nonconformity. Procedures and facilities are in place to contain any accidental spills and clean up.
Wastewater discharges from swimming pool, water features, cooling towers, etc. are discharged according to regulations. Silt water from construction sites are controlled by silt trap prior to discharge into public drains. Regular water sampling tests have been satisfactory.
Objectives & Targets – 2007 to 2010
Continue to monitor, review and ensure wastewater discharges are within legal parameters.
