SMU began its graduation ceremonies on 29 July, which will run for five days. This year marks a record for the university, with 3,883 graduates—the highest number since its founding in 2000. Among the graduating cohort were 25-year-old twin sisters from the small town of Tampin in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. The Wei sisters came to Singapore to pursue their studies, starting with a Diploma in Accountancy at SP, before both furthered their education at SUSS School of Accountancy. Their biggest challenge while studying in Singapore was their English proficiency, but they gradually improved after one semester. Scholarships and financial aid from SMU also helped ease their family’s financial burden. Both sisters share a strong interest in numbers, though they had not expected to end up in the same course or even land jobs through SMU’s on-campus corporate networking events. In August, the sisters will start work together at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), one of the Big Four accounting firms, as digital assurance associates.
