Microbiology is a specialised area of biology that deals with living things ordinarily too small to be seen without magnification. Microbiologists work in almost every industry – from food, agriculture and pollution control to biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and health.
In the face of recent infectious disease outbreaks in human (for examples Type A H1N1 influenza, SARS), including those originating from food sources (for example, bird flu), it is now extremely important for the microbiologists to tackle this immerse threat that mankind is facing now. Hence, the Specialist Diploma in Microbiology aims to bridge the field of medical microbiology with that of the different industries of microbiology domains to reinforce the importance of public health.
The Specialist Diploma in Microbiology course is designed to equip laboratory practitioners with theoretical knowledge of medical, environmental, pharmaceutical, food and industrial microbiology as well as practical applications using new and emerging technologies to enable them to work effectively in the medical diagnostic and investigative microbiology laboratories.
Participants are required to bring computer Notebook when attending lessons, as you may need it to access the e-learning materials, writing reports, etc.
The course is a one-year part-time programme. It consists of 2 Post Diploma Certificates (PDC) conducted over 2 semesters, 1 PDC per semester. The first PDC to start with is PDC1. The classes are conducted in the evening.
The programme consists of 270 instructional hours spread over six modules in two post diploma certificate framework (PDC1 and 2). It aims to equip diploma graduates with the theoretical concepts of food and medical microbiology and the practical applications to enable them to work effectively in the medical diagnostic and investigative clinical microbiology, pharmaceutical and food laboratories.
Each PDC comprises three modules and the details are as follows:
