About the Centre

The Centre for IC Design and Nanofabrication is one of the core technology centres under the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Established in 2000, it provides the facilities to support the Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Diploma in Energy Systems and Management and Diploma in Applied Chemistry with Materials Science.

The centre provides the facilities for training and R&D activities in the area of IC design, Wafer Fabrication, Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS), Micro/Nanofabrication, Flexible Electronics and Photovoltaic (PV) cell.

Its mission is to train students for the semiconductor industry, preparing them to be work-ready. The centre also seeks collaboration with industry and academic/research institutes in joint R&D projects involving staff/students to improve competencies in the area of IC design & nanofabrication. In addition, we also provide customised course to retrain and upgrade manpower for the semiconductor industries.

The Nanofabrication Centre is located in T12A203 (Block 12) and the IC Design lab is located in T12401-02. It comprises of a 450-square metre cleanroom of class 100 & class 1000 and houses facilities for designing, fabrication and testing of Integrated Circuits, MEMS, Flexible Electronics and PV cell. The IC Design lab houses workstations with IC Design software.

Capabilities and Technical Services

Over the last 10 years, the centre has built up capabilities in the development of MEMS projects, particularly in BioMEMS using silicon, glass and polymer technology. Some of the past projects include micro-valve, micro-gripper, particle sorters, mixers, micro-optofluidic devices, etc.

The centre provides the facilities and has the processing capabilities for Wafer Fabrication, PV cell, MEMS and Flexible Electronics. We also offer consultancy work in the area of IC design and Micro-fabrication.

The centre could provide consultancy work in the following:

  • Semiconductor device fabrication
  • Process capability for photolithography, thin film deposition process, wet and dry etching process, wafer bonding, growth of carbon nanotubes(PECVD), thermal diffusion/oxidation and screen printing
  • Profiling capability - contact and non-contact profilers, SEM, FESEM, AFM, LSM and microscopes
  • Characterization and testing stations - probing station with IV/CV measurement, 4-point probe, PV cell tester and spectrometer
