Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, was at the SP Graduates’ Guild (SPGG) on Tuesday, 3 June 2014, for a dialogue session, addressing a crowd of about 200 participants, consisting of a good mix of SPGG members and Singapore Polytechnic alumni.
The topic of the day was “Singapore Restructuring: How do we ensure the competitive edge of Businesses and Singaporeans into 2020?” amidst the economic restructuring climate in Singapore. The session was to provide a platform where companies and everyday Singaporeans can raise their concerns on how to keep themselves competitive with the momentum of the economic restructuring taking shape.
In the first half of the session, Ms Chew Mok Lee, Assistant Chief Executive (Capabilities & Partnerships) of SPRING Singapore and Ms Quek Su Lynn, Tax Director (Corporate Tax - Services Branch) of IRAS addressed the technical questions of the topic, especially on the available schemes that can help companies in Singapore.
The second half of the session saw DPM Tharman engaging the audience on the broader perspective. In his opening remarks, he mentioned, “Restructuring is painful, some firms (may) lose and some win. But we want to make sure that, overall, Singaporeans benefit, when we reach 2020, our society is better off, more confident, and the businesses that survive are able to do so not just by struggling to survive, but on the quality of their products, their people and technologies, and their ability to win markets that way. This is really the objective.”
This session was well received by the audience, with many positive feedbacks generated from the crowd. Alumni can look forward to more of such similar sessions in the coming future.
The dialogue session was organised by SP Graduates’ Guild (SPGG) and Singapore Polytechnic Entrepreneurs’ Club (SPEC).
