I came from a strict household where learning art is not an option in studies. My parents used to tell me to aim for business-related courses, but I knew my interest was in art. During my time in secondary school, my grade was bad which affected my ‘O’ Levels results. I got to know of the Diploma in Landscape Architecture (DLA) course during the SP Open House, and managed to convince my parents that it could be an option in my next phase of studies. I was accepted into DLA and was determined to prove myself. The DLA course enables one to deeply appreciate nature, as well as the sensitivity towards the needs of the community and the consideration of sustainable and green design in the environment around us.
My best experience in DLA was the semi-detached project in Year 1 during 2012. The client gave us the brief to design the landscaping in the plot of land with the opportunity of the best design being selected for actual construction at site. Over the next 2 years in DLA, the rest of the projects were opportunities to explore and express my creativity, enabling me to hone my skills further to appreciate design and landscape as a whole.
I am thankful to the lecturers who were a source of motivation and inspiration, supporting and believing in the students while constantly encouraging us to achieve the best of our abilities. I am blessed to have a best friend who also constantly pushed my level of creativity in design. We ended up graduating with gold and silver medals together. The experiences and memories have created an incredible journey in SP, giving hope for a wonderful future ahead.
