Banking Option

The banking and financial services sector is one of the major contributors to Singapore's economic growth.

The Banking Option trains students to meet the dynamic needs of Singapore's banking and financial services sector and contributes to the Government's drive to maintain Singapore's status as an international financial centre.

Financial Trading Option

Singapore is the third largest foreign exchange center and a major international centre for fund management while the Singapore Exchange has been the fastest growing financial futures exchange.

With Singapore as an international financial centre, graduates of the Financial Trading Option are in demand by banks, fund management firms, insurance companies and broking firms as well as finance departments of various companies.

Provides students with an understanding of basic statistics concepts and their relevance to the business environment. Topics covered include descriptive statistics, probability distributions, sampling, estimations, hypothesis testing, chi-square, analysis of variance, linear regression and correlation, and index numbers. Statistical software and computer-based learning (CBL) packages are also introduced.

BA0288 Management and Organisational Behaviour
The first part of the module provides students with basic knowledge of management principles in planning, organising and controlling. Topics on organisational culture and change management are also included. The second part focuses on OB (Organisational Behaviour) topics such as personality, perception, group dynamics, motivation, leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.

Introduces the basics in marketing to students. Topics include the strategic marketing management process, market opportunities analysis and target market selection. The elements of the marketing mix will also be examined. An integrated approach will be adopted to discuss how these elements can be blended to produce an effective marketing programme.

Microeconomics will provide students with an understanding of the basic microeconomic concepts which are needed in decision-making processes. It also enables students to have a better understanding of the larger economic environment and to relate the concepts taught to real world situations.

Macroeconomics will provide students with an understanding of the macroeconomic concepts and applications which are needed in decision-making processes in the business world. BA207Z Principles of Accounting
Provides students with an understanding of the basic concepts and principles of accounting. Significant areas are the double entry concept, accounting process, special journals, subsidiary ledgers and control accounts, and the financial statements of merchandising businesses. This also includes an understanding of the control and accounting for cash, inventories and fixed assets, goods and services tax, partnership and fundamental accounting principles. An accounting software will be introduced.

BA9106 Discovering Business and Enterprise
Aims to give students a broad overview of the different sectors of Singapore’s open economy and the different functions and processes of a business enterprise. It also explains the role, responsibilities and code of conduct of the students’ chosen professions. Students will also learn the importance of creativity and business innovations in enhancing the value and competitiveness of the enterprise. In addition, students will be introduced to the Emotional Intelligence (EI) Six Seconds model, in which they will understand each of the 8 competencies.

A compulsory module for all first year students, ECG 1 aims to develop an understanding of personal interests, strengths, values and life goals. With greater knowledge and understanding of self, planning and decision making in choosing a future career can be better developed. Some topics covered in ECG 1 include ‘Defining My SP Life’, ‘Personal Branding’, ‘Discovering My Interests’, ‘Planning for Success – My Personal Action Plan’ and more.

Covers the functions and uses of trade documents, trade terms, the various methods of payments in trade, the risks faced by traders in international trade, and the different types of counter trade. In addition, students are taught the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) “Uniform Rules for Collection” and “Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits”. Introduces students to the basics of trade, practical aspects of importing and exporting goods, and the various shipping documents commonly encountered in shipping goods internationally by both sea and air freights. Students will also be exposed to INCO terms, shipping procedures and shipping terminologies.

Introduces the basic concept of customer relationship management and its strategic importance in today's business environment. It also discusses the various tools commonly employed by organisations to manage customer data, develop customer loyalty and improve customer profitability.

Commences with the basic features of the Singapore legal system. It then proceeds to introduce students to the basic principles of contract law, the Sale of Goods Act, the law of tort, cheques, agency and intellectual property. The legal aspects of business organisations will also be covered.

Aims to equip the students with a working knowledge of fundamental and technical analysis and its application in security analysis. More in-depth coverage of the stocks and the features of capital market instruments will be taught and the students will have the opportunity to participate in an online stock trading game to reinforce their understanding of the dealing mechanics of stock trading and to apply their knowledge of security analysis.

Year One Macroeconomics is extended to undertake more thorough analysis of domestic macroeconomic relationships. Focus is on obtaining deeper understanding of real variables and sectors to enable simple forecasting of macroeconomic aggregates. Theoretical concepts, though covered, take secondary importance to hands-on economic laboratory research and forecasts through the Internet.

Focuses on principles of modern financial management, covering the role of financial managers and issues they face, eg. agency problem etc. It introduces financial concepts of time value of money, breakeven/leverages, cash budgets and applies them in financial planning as well as in current asset and liability structure decisions.

Focuses on basic tenets in financial management such as risk-return concepts, valuation models and strategic long-term investment and financing decisions. Introduces the features and activities in the financial markets of Singapore and the world. Aims to equip students with the Design Thinking mindset, methods and tools to conceptualise innovative solutions for real life problems. Students will also be exposed to trends and issues related to themes, such as Healthcare, Active Ageing, Environment, and Social Integration. In the process, they will develop a better understanding of themselves and the world, as well as the positive impact they can make.

Provides an overview of the foreign exchange market, money market, and other financial markets. Students will be introduced to the mechanics of trading in the various instruments in these markets. Using these instruments for funding and investment are also discussed.

Introduces the students to the principles and current practices of personal financial planning. It provides an overview of risk management, insurance planning, tax planning, retirement planning, estate planning and credit management. Provides a basic understanding of the various credit functions in a bank in the context of lending to consumers individuals and corporations. Focuses on the sales and relationship skills necessary in wealth advisory and management. Topics will cover the client marketing process from a non-technical angle. Students will be taught from the pre-customer acquisition groundwork phase right through to the after-sales service and relationship deepening aspects. These will include identifying a clients preferred approach, networking and sourcing for contacts, understanding social protocols and communication skills, making a sales presentation and negotiating with a client and lastly, the account management scope.

Enables students to understand the legal relationship between a bank and its customers, the duties of a bank and of the customer, the nature of cheques, the rights and liabilities of the parties to cheques and the bank's role as a paying and collecting agent. Enables students to understand the legal aspects of the lending operations, security taking methods and enforcement rights of a bank, the implications of judicial management and the legal principles of insurance in relation to security taking.
