On the 9th June 2015, we were invited to the UBS Youth Finance Academy 2015 for 50 students from 18 pre-tertiary schools island-wide. To us, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend this inaugural event and it was awe-inspiring from the word “go”. Not only did we have the chance to rub shoulders and learn from among the best in the Banking & Finance sector, we were also treated to sumptuous spreads of breakfast, lunch and high tea buffets throughout the workshop.
On day one, we had a mini lecture by Prof Chan Onn. His talk on economics in reality against the backdrop of theories, complemented and enhanced the economic concepts we learnt in SP and brought new insights to us. We also had the opportunity to know ourselves better through the Behaviour Profiling. Later in the day, we went to Bloomberg Head Office where we learnt how it keeps financial information central to its business idea. We also managed to interact with some of the key executives of Bloomberg who shared with us the challenges of their jobs. And of course, we had a peek at the legendary pantry of a Bloomberg office!
On the second day, we had an enriching sharing session on the interrelatedness of history and economics with Mr Kelvin Tay, Chief Investment Officer of UBS. Key personnel from various departments in the Bank also dropped in to share with us what a typical work day is like for them. Saving the best for the last, we had the opportunity to apply what we have learnt through a hands-on activity on portfolio management. We had to create the best portfolio of assets for a client within a short period of time and under rapidly changing scenarios.
After the two-day event, the inaugural graduation ceremony was officiated by Mr Edmund Koh, Country Head of UBS Singapore. From the many happy faces all around us, it was clear that we have all enjoyed the workshop tremendously.
THANK YOU, UBS!
