“Happy faces all around upon successful completion of the workshop!”
An enriching workshop by Barclays Bank PLC
By Neeshu Sarah Mathew (DBKF 2B01) & Neha Annie Mathew (DBKF 2B02)
On 9th October 2015, 21 DBKF second and third year students had the privilege to attend an interview skills and CV writing workshop conducted by Barclays Bank PLC. To kick start the day, we were welcomed by Mr Isaac Davies, APAC Treasurer, who gave us a brief history of Barclays Bank, which is 325 years old.
The first session of the day was headed by Mr Yeoh Han Long and Mr Suvro Ghosh, who covered CV writing and interview skills which are critical for success in starting a career. Important topics discussed were the success skills one needs, interview skills and examples of the dos and don’ts of CV writing. We felt that this segment was very useful as we learnt how to better format and highlight important aspects of a CV, as well as other important aspects of an interview such as having good body language.
During the first session, we also attended a talk on compliance by Mr Chua Soo Kiat. The talk was very informative as many of us are aware of the increasing importance of compliance in the banking and finance sector. Mr Chua elaborated on what is compliance, the important role it plays, social responsibility and even how we can relate this to our CV writing and interview skills.
We were also given the opportunity to have a tour of the trading floor, which was an eye-opening experience for all of us. It was fascinating to see so many traders at work in their respective departments on the trading floor, making huge mind-boggling deals, day-in, day-out.
Lunch followed the first session and this was where we were able to meet and talk to other members of the Barclays Treasury team. After lunch, we were assigned to different mentors from the treasury team, who looked at our CVs and gave us advice on how to improve them. Thereafter, we were put through a mock job interview with our mentors. After the interviews, we had a one-on-one debrief session whereby our mentors showed us how we can improve our interview skills.
We would like to give our sincere thanks to the Barclays Treasury team for this memorable experience and would like to encourage all our peers to seize this opportunity to attend the workshop when it is organised again.
