National Management Competition 2011
The National Management Competition is an annual tournament aims to inculcate entrepreneur spirit and business management skills in participants. Teams are pitted against each other in a simulated business environment that requires foresight and analytical skills to succeed. Acting as the management of the virtual companies, each team has to send their decisions on pricing, marketing, production and finance.
50 teams took part in the competition and were put through a qualifying and semi-finals stage. After two weeks of intense action, eight teams were left to compete in the finals at SIM headquarters on Saturday, 23th July 2011. After five hours of intense contest, SP Alumni team “Friends Only” emerged as the champions despite facing strong competitors from local universities and corporate teams.
The team consisted of Jun Kiat, Yi Hao, Fook Kee and Ker Liang, all DBF students who graduated this year. Here are the thoughts of the team members on winning the national open competition.
Team Leader Lye Yi Hao said: “We are grateful for the organisers as the competition gave us valuable insights on managing a business. Our victory and lessons learned will spur us to scale new heights in the ever changing business world.”
Tan Jun Kiat said: “The key winning factor is team work. We could only meet after work and had to discuss till late at night to formulate our winning strategies. It was a struggle and we had to put up with only a few hours of sleep each night.
Chan Ker Liang remarked that “actively planning for the future ensures smooth adaptation to an ever-changing environment. It enables us to position our business in an advantageous position”
Loon Fook Kee in a philosophical mood said:"the price of success is hard work and dedication to apply the best of ourselves to the task at hand."
The team would like to thank their lecturer Mr Christopher Cheong for providing valuable insights on the competition for the past two years.
“Friends Only” will be representing Singapore in the Asian Management Game 2011 hosted by Macau this October. Let us wish the future Bill Gates and Warren Buffet of Singapore all the best in the competition and doing our nation proud!
