SP-ICAEW Networking Event at Cricket Club

SP-ICAEW Networking Event at Cricket Club

From: Regine Teo Yi Xuan

Class: Year 2 DAC 10
Enriching is the best word I can use to describe the SP-ICAEW Networking Event that I have attended. The event was held during our June vacation holiday on 12th June 2014 at City Hall Cricket Club. I have never been to such a networking event before and I was really honored to be given this opportunity to attend this event. Through the networking event, I got to learn more and be able to apply what I have learnt in Business Communication and networking training. It was a real life scenario and application of a networking session which we might encounter in the future when we start working.
I gained much insights and knowledge on how to communicate with those professional adults from various professional bodies. During the networking session, I was given the chance to meet professionals from different industries and companies. They shared with us their experience and gave us really good advice on how to be an accountant or auditor. Despite us being just students, they did not hesitate to ask for our opinions and gave us advice on our aspirations. They were very friendly and engaging. I was even given the chance to exchange name cards with them and to know more about the careers they are currently pursuing.  The people whom I have met were directors and managers from RT Audit film and Shared Services Charities. They shared with me their life being an auditor and I asked them some questions with regards to my aspirations. They told me that as long as I worked hard and put in my effort, I would be able to get the results which I deserved and upon seeing the results, I would find that it was all worth it. They also told me that it took a long time for them to be able to achieve today’s result but they did not regret their choices. I learnt from them about the difficulties they faced when they were auditors and how they were able to solve the problems. One example would be one director who told me that he received a client from an industry which he was unsure of. However, he was able to overcome it by going for courses and attending lessons to learn more about the industry. Another example would be that one manager who told me that when she started to work in the industry, she did not have the proper business etiquette of networking with people but she managed to master it when she attended more networking sessions with people from other companies.
Initially when I was given the situation to network with the professionals, I was abit nervous and anxious on how to start a conversation. I was very scared of being awkward around them or offend them unknowingly. I did not have a pleasant mindset to start off the networking session. However, when I actually approached them and started to chat with them, I realised that they were not scary at all. Most of the time, they were the ones who kept asking us questions and continued the conversation. From this, I learnt that as students, we should open up and not be concerned that there was a barrier between us and the professionals. If we kept thinking that it was hard to approach these adults then it would really be tough. We should instead try our efforts to start the ball rolling in order to get endless opportunities and to learn beyond what was taught back in classrooms.
I really appreciated this opportunity as I was able to learn the technique even faster when I had the chance to apply it directly in real life settings. If I was given another chance to go and network with people from different industries, I would not hesitate to do so anymore. It was an experiential learning day and I would definitely regret if I were to miss this session. It taught me a lot and gave me more directions on my aspirations. I hoped that I would be able to attend more networking sessions with the different industry partners in future.

“To be successful, you have to be able to relate to people; they have to be satisfied with your personality to be able to do business with you and to build a relationship with mutual trust.”
