By Xin Hui, DAC/3A/06
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, ICAEW, recently celebrated its fifth anniversary at the prestigious Tower Club in Singapore. Many distinguished guests from the accountancy and finance profession including ICAEW Chief Executive Michael Izza and Regional Director for South East Asia Mark Billington attended the evening reception. We were very honoured to be invited to grace this event and to assist as the Student Ambassadors.
On this special occasion, it marks a significant milestone for Singapore Polytechnic(SP). SP signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ICAEW to develop a Finance and Accounting Acceleration Programme. This programme provides a new route exclusively for Singapore Polytechnic accountancy diploma students to gain ICAEW’s world leading Associate Chartered Accountant qualification, the ACA. SP's accountancy students will be able to obtain credits from studying for their diplomas and they willbe able to embark on ICAEW’s ACA with SP upon graduating from three years of studies .
This inaugural event marks the many opportunities in store for diploma students. It opens another door for us to obtain a professional qualification that is internationally recognised. In addition, with the world renowned branding of ICAEW, I believe choosing this path will give me an edge over others, especially with today's competitive world. I am glad that SP has lined up a series of programmes to prepare us in attainng the Professional Level of the prestigious chartered accountant title upon graduating from SP. We will then embark to become full-fledged ICAEW Chartered Accountants upon completing the Advanced level.
Along with the signing of MOU, we get opportunities to network with the invited guests. It was my first time attending a networking event. Through this networking session, I gained exposure and built relations with the people I met. There was this instance, a particular industrial partner was taken aback when he knew about my age. He could not contain it and shared my age with another guest. We all had a great laugh. He was impressed with my networking skill and believed that it was great that the school has provided us with such opportunities. I truly enjoyed this networking session and am thankful to the school and ICAEW for giving us this chance to network and assist as a student ambassador.
