Deloitte Open House 2015

On 11th November 2015, 50 DAC students visited the premises of Deloitte. It was truly an eye opening experience as we got to know more about the life of an auditor in Deloitte and the different career opportunities open to us.

Listening attentively to the sharing by Deloitte

The public generally perceives auditors as leading an hectic working life. However this wasn’t entirely true in Deloitte when Mr Yang Chi Chih, audit talent partner, shared more about his journey in Deloitte. He told us that most auditors usually do not stay for long in audit but he actually stayed on for more than 10 years. This is because auditors have to work long hours during the peak periods for a few months, which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. It was through his sharing that I gained insights about life in audit.

Mr Yang Chi Chih sharing with us his experiences as an auditor

If there was one thing which I vividly remembered, it will be the many fun activities in Deloitte such as inter-department games, dinners and many more. Just thinking about food really got me day-dreaming. However I instantly woke up to the job offerings by Deloitte. Deloitte is offering a full sponsorship to Polytechnic graduates who want to acquire the Accredited Chartered Accountant (ACA) qualification by the prestigious Institute of Chartered Accounts in England and Wales (ICAEW). The Sponsorship covers the full course fees incurred during the course of the ACA programme. This sponsorship is open to about 20 graduates based on GPA and good CCA records. Upon completion of the ICAEW certificate, we are bonded to Deloitte for 2 years.
I am passionate to say that I would prefer to take up a professional qualification instead of pursuing a university degree. Furthermore, the ICAEW allows one to attain the Chartered Accountant title which is mandatory for audit partners to have. As a Singaporean male student, I can make full use of my time in National Service to study for the ICAEW qualifications.
The trip to Deloitte was very interesting as they showed how auditors could balance work and play. This talk has helped me think more about my future and career in the audit world.
