First stop, DBID….now NUS Dean Scholar.

Tan Zhi Rong, a Business Innovation and Design graduate from Singapore Polytechnic Business School, did the diploma proud having been awarded the highly coveted NUS Business Dean Scholarship. This scholarship covers the undergraduate’s tuition fees, along with a living and start up allowance.

Zhi Rong recounts that the application and selection process was a rather unique one. Students were invited to apply based on their initial application to NUS Business School. The selection process included a battery of tests from group-based discussions, personality tests to a general knowledge quiz. These tests were designed to gauge an individual’s leadership skills as well as identifying personality traits that would make someone an outstanding NUS student. Over 200 students were invited to apply, with only about 20 who were finally awarded the scholarship.

When asked how he felt about being selected for this prestigious scholarship, he replied, “Apart from its monetary benefits, it comes as a recognition of the hard work, sacrifice and determination that I have put in during my days as a DBID student in Singapore Polytechnic. It spurs me to work hard as it validates the belief that in life, we will reap what we sow. Furthermore, it’s also my way of showing the people who have stood by me, mainly my lecturers in DBID, friends and family that their tutelage, care and concern has paid off.”

Zhi Rong also shared how his years as a student in DBID has helped prepare him for his academic career in NUS, “DBID has imbued in me many soft skills which are highly transferable, and these skills have really helped me to stand out in an academically driven institution like NUS. Also, having graduated from a diploma course that focuses and values the thinking process rather than the outcome, I find that I value-add to my current community by contributing insights that go beyond what is suggested at surface value.”

As he starts his new life beyond the walls of SP Business School, he leaves behind some words of wisdom, “As students, we often worry about our grades and why we are not excelling in our pursuits. But everyone has their worth. It’s all about discovering it, embracing it and finding a calling. We all have something to offer. And only time and hard work will show us what we are destined to achieve.”
