SP Biz Sch Presents: “Making Sense of the Stock Market”
The “buzz” was in the SP campus on 24 November 2010, Wednesday afternoon. The SP Business School played host to about 50 secondary school teachers and principals in a workshop: “Making Sense of the Stock Market” that afternoon in the Hall (SP Staff Centre).
Mr. Hee Joh Liang, Deputy Principal (Academic Planning) graced the event with a welcome speech. He also acknowledged the support given by the sponsors - Thomson- Reuters, SGX, SIAS and the Business Times. Mr. Timothy Chan, Director, Business School and Mrs Wong Mei Shan, Deputy-Director played host to our visitors with their disarming charms and warmth.
Mr David Tan and Mr. Wan Seng Keong, our Business School lecturers with industry experience in portfolio/fund management conducted the talks – “ Fundamentals of Stock Trading” and “Managing an Equity Portfolio” respectively.
Mrs Agnes Ching, another of our Business School lecturer co-hosted the stock trading game with David. Participants formed a paired team – each team being provided with a virtual start-up capital of $200,000. Buy and sell orders of stocks/counters were made as news flashes were projected on the screen. Orders were keyed in (using laptops) by student brokers assigned to each team, giving real-time trading positions.
The winning teams from St. Hilda’s Secondary School, North View Secondary School and West Spring Secondary School received their prizes from our Deputy Principal , Mr. Hee Joh Liang. Prizes were generously sponsored by Thomson Reuters and our Business School.
