SP Business School
Overseas Internship Programme to Vietnam ( Ho Chi Minh City)
Duration: 9th March – 14th April 2011
by Tan Lii Chong
A The programme was well oversubscribed when it was marketed initially to the DBA Year 3’s students in early January. Through sessions of screening and interviews, 16 students from the various options i.e. IBT, MM & LSCM were shortlisted to participate in this programme during the vacation.
The main objectives of this Vietnam ITP are as follows:
- To work overseas in a realistic cross-cultural environment
- To apply technical and business concepts learnt
- To open one’s mind to the social, cultural and living issues of the host country
Importantly we wanted the students to have a different learning experience during this short stint.
These 16 students were paired to work in 8 different companies for 28 days. The establishments ranged from bank, travel agency, concrete supplier to logistic firm. During this period, these students got along well with their colleagues and it was definitely ‘heartbreaking’ to see them bid farewell to each other at the end of the period. Their experience during their stint will indeed be a remarkable and precious episode in one.
‘Meeting with SBG’
On 8th April 2011, the students were fortunate to be able to participate in the monthly ‘Raffles Networking Night’ organized by the Singapore Business Group (SBG) at the Duxton Hotel. Besides having the opportunity to network with the Singapore businessmen, they got to meet the representatives from the Hongkong Business Association and Korean Chamber of Commerce. And of course, they had the privilege of tucking into our very own local dishes like satay and Hainanese chicken rice
‘University visit & Exchange Culture meeting’
Our students made a visit to the University of Economics – Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) on 11th March 2011. A brief history of Vietnam and the evolution of its economy were delivered by one of the professors from the University. Students from both UEH and SP took turns to make presentations on the cultural highlights of the two Asean nations. Song performances were also put up by the respective groups.
On the same evening, the students visited the local students’ residences. This gave them a glimpse of the student lifestyle.
All work and no play would definitely make the group a dull one! Before the start of the ‘working journey’, our students had the chance to visit the many places of interest of this beautiful country. City tours to renowned memorial scenic spots in the vicinity such as the reunification place, museum and the post office building were conducted.
A day tour on 10th Mar to the Cu Chi Tunnel and Cao Dai temple was a memorable one.
A 2D1N Vinh Long – Can Tho tour was arranged during the first weekend to bring the entire group to the Mekong vicinity. Another 2D1N Phan Thiet – Mui Ne tour to the beautiful beach resort was conducted where our students were surprised at the unspoilt nature.
‘When it’s over………….’
As the saying goes…..”all good things have to come to an end”. The students have come to a unanimous conclusion – an Enriching OITP indeed. Yup…they love Vietnam!
