I have been in the workforce for almost a year and a half, and I absolutely love what I am doing. I am currently an Account Manager at Webnatics, a Search Marketing Company providing full-service solution to businesses for online marketing. In short, I help local businesses promote their products and services to potential clients through Search Engine Marketing, whilst growing their business in a cost effective manner. I never thought that I would go down the path of online advertising, especially since this channel of marketing was never taught in school, or even in university. Today, no longer being limited to Search and Social, digital marketing has proven to be an effective marketing channel for small and medium enterprises to leverage on. I have no regrets in my first job as I tapped on this growing industry, while building up my career in Digital Advertising.

One of the keys take-away from having to working with a diverse portfolio of clients, especially from new start-ups is the spirit of entrepreneurship. This really inspired me to take a leap of faith to set up Food Aesthetic. Food Aesthetic started operations last month and aims to provide new possibilities for a healthy lifestyle that are both sustainable and convenient. It uses a unique e-commerce business model that is customer centric focused through a strong online community.

Prior to entering the workforce, I chose Singapore Polytechnic (SP) as my first choice and took up a Diploma in Business Administration, majoring in Marketing. Having graduated in Year 2010, I furthered my studies at the University of Melbourne, by pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Commerce, majoring in Finance & Marketing. While in SP, I was given many opportunities to develop my leadership and interpersonal skills.  I joined the Changi Youth Ambassadors (CYA) in my first year, later becoming a Senior Rover and held a Committee Member role in Publics Relations. CYA was also one of the few CCAs who has the most National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) awardees, as we recognizes the importance to develop personal qualities of self-reliance, perseverance and a sense of responsibility to oneself, the society and the nation. I am proud to be a recipient of the NYAA (Gold) in 2011. Moreover, I was also an active member in the School of Business (SB) Club. Being a facilitator for freshmen orientation camps, orientation day and even emceeing for events are some of the things I had done for the SB club. Apart from these, I also took part in Leadership Training Camps held by Department of Student Affairs and School of Business. These opportunities were not possible without the recognition of SB Club Committee, Mr. David Tan, and Mr. Helmi, from the Department of Student Affairs.

In the course of my studies, I particularly enjoyed the countless opportunities to apply textbook knowledge to practice. I remembered my first “hands-on” project was with MVO Marketing, a leading ice-cream distributor in SG, where we came up with a marketing plan to help boost channel sales for Mövenpick, under the guidance and supervision of lecturer Mr Kenneth Lee. Additionally, at the end of my second year, I chose to do an overseas Industrial Training Programme (OITP). I interned in the Business Development team and had to understand the business operations in a short span of time during my three weeks attachment with Omni Tech, a semi-conductor company in Suzhou. One of my final tasks was to come up with a Company Technology Road map and a full marketing plan for the business based on my understanding around the business operations and its competition. Despite it being very challenging, especially with the language barrier, I really enjoyed my short stint there. As I was entering my final year in SP, I was really looking forward to Final Year Project (FYP), a yearlong module that requires working with other teammates from the rest of the School of Business. Despite all the late nights and frustrations the team faces, I am really proud to have supportive members, which made this project possibly the most memorable in my life. The final presentation was particular emotional after we presented our “baby” to industry leaders and lecturers, but definitely rewarding, in terms of our grades. Although it was a pity that we did not manage to make our project a reality at that time, I am glad that I have the opportunity to put what I had learnt, from business planning to executions, to good use in Food Aesthetic. Lastly, to end my walk down memory lane with SP, I could not help remembering the time when I participated in an overseas community project – Operation hope Cambodia, in collaboration with Operation Hope Foundation. With a young and passionate team of 20, including lecturers like Mr. Ben Cho and Ms. Audrey Lai, we visited one of the small towns, called Prey Vang, in Cambodia. It was definitely an experiential learning opportunity as we learnt to build a house, make and distribute soaps and lived with a really caring community at an orphanage. This whole experience, from planning to when we were there was indeed a test on teamwork, problem-solving skills and learning to tolerate each other under difficult conditions and unfamiliar environment.

Indeed, the list of my experience and stories can go on and on because my road with SP has indeed been an enriching and vibrant one. I believe that SP provides a wholesome development of my personal well being rather than just focusing on education. As much as results are important, SP has become a large family to me that I know will always watch over me. That being said, although I have left SP for about 5 years, I don’t feel as though I have really left SP. As a part of SP alumni, we have the support of a very strong alumnus, who was very helpful for start-up businesses. Don’t look elsewhere, SP is your choice 
