DBA Graduate Awarded PSC Scholarship

SP’s Diploma in Business Administration (DBA) alumnus, Joy Tan Yan Jun, was awarded the prestigious Public Service Commission (PSC) Scholarship in 2010.  The PSC scholarships are for outstanding young men and women who desire to serve Singapore and Singaporeans, through a fulfilling and rewarding career in the Civil Service upon their graduation. In Sept 2011, Joy left Singapore for Manchester, UK to pursue a degree in International Business, Finance & Economics with the University of Manchester.

The DBA course at Singapore Polytechnic’s School of Business was Joy’s first choice of study after her “O” levels examinations. She visited the SP Open House then and was convinced that the practical and hands-on training was what she preferred.  Joy performed well academically and was one of the top DBA graduates for the cohort that graduated in May 2010.

During her course of study, Joy has had the opportunities to go on various overseas trips which widened her horizon and enriched her poly experience.  Amongst them were:

• Singapore-Miyazaki Friendship Exchange Programme in Japan in 2007
• Mobile Intensive Learning Experience in Kanazawa in Japan in 2008
• Industrial Training Programme in Shanghai in March 2009
• National Youth Council Singapore-Malaysia Youth Camp in Trengganu and Kuala Lumpur

Besides excelling in her studies, Joy was also very active in her CCA.  She served as a Changi Youth Ambassador (CYA) for three years from 2007 to 2009 and particularly enjoyed her role there as it had helped to “brighten up the day knowing that you have helped someone”.

Joy was nominated for the National Youth Achievers’ Award (NYAA) in 2010 and was conferred the award in Nov 2011.   She was also involved in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Voices of the Future Programme (APEC 2009) where, as a youth delegate, she played host to and interacted with the overseas political leaders and participants.

Joy fondly summed up her three years in SP Business School as “enriching and life-changing”. To her, it was not all about studying.  She was given ample opportunities to be involved in many events and activities that had “widened her views and horizons”.  She added that the School gave students like her, “the flexibility to discover yourself and room to grow”.  She is particularly thankful and grateful to her lecturers for their guidance.

Joy is currently in her second year of her degree programme.  Due to the wide offering of her degree course, Joy has taken a balanced focus on International Business, Finance and Economics.  She is heading to Sweden’s renown Jönköping International Business School (JIBS) for a semester of overseas immersion in Jan 2013.  We wish Joy every success as she scale greater heights and spread her wings further ashore.
