The Quek Tee Thye Bursary Award was initiated in 2004 by Professor Toh Chai Keong with a generous donation of 5000 Pound Sterling, in appreciation of the help he received from the late Mr Quek Tee Thye.

The late Mr Quek joined the Singapore Polytechnic in 1985 and was a Deputy Director in the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering before he passed away in 2003. Those who knew him remembered him as someone who was friendly, sincere, generous and humble. He had always been helpful to his students and colleagues.

In 1988, one of Mr Quek’s students approached him to serve as his guarantor for him to pursue his studies in U.K.WIthout hesitation, Mr Quek agreed. The student went on to pursue a PhD at the Cambridge University, and today Professor Toh is a Visiting Professor at Nanyang Technological University, School of Computer Engineering. This bursary, worth $2000, is for students who have achieved outstanding results for at least a year of studies in EEE despite financial difficulties.

The three recipients are all second year students. For academic year 2007/2008, they are:
Mr Ng Yuet Foong (Diploma in Aerospace Engineering)
Mr Phoon See Yong (Diploma in Electronics, Computer and Communications Engineering)
Mr Tan Jing Yuan ( Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering).
They received their awards from Professor Toh at an award ceremony held on 11 January 2008.
