Damien Wong Wai Loon, Year 1 Diploma in Human Resource Management with Psychology, Recipient of Tay Eng Soon Scholarship 2015
Damien is a first-year student in the Diploma in Human Resource Management with Psychology (DHRMP) course. His journey to the poly has been an exciting one.
According to Damien, “I joined SP because I wanted to go for a more specialized course, and I knew that SP has a course called DHRMP. I was attracted by the interesting modules offered by this course. At the same time, I had an interest in this field and hope to work in this field next time.”
His roots lie in ITE College East, where he excelled in his business modules. Being an average student in secondary school. Damien found his passion when he started his business course in ITE. Today, he is the proud recipient of the Tay Eng Soon scholarship.

While in ITE, he was given the exposure to competitions and internships where he was able to develop his strengths and hone his skills. He is grateful to his College Advisor from ITE College East, Mr Eric Joseph Chong, who had been a great mentor to him. He was there to guide him whenever he had any doubts or questions.
Damien developed his interest in human resource during his participation in the Singapore HR Challenge in 2014 and 2015. Participants were given the opportunity to work with real clients and present their best HR practical solutions to the panel of judges. His team secured first runner-up and second runner-up positions in 2014 and 2015.

According to Damien, he is a self-driven person. “I tend to have goals in mind and will try my best to ace every obstacles even if it’s difficult.”
While in ITE, his team worked with a heartland bakery located at Bedok Reservoir Road. With their active marketing campaign, they helped the bakery achieve a 15% increase in their sales. They used marketing strategies such as a loyalty card campaign and colorful flyers, and achieved 1st place for their efforts.

He also had a meaningful internship experience in Niigata, Japan for 2 weeks where he was attached to a logistics company, Touseikan Ltd, and learnt how to perform work activities in the manufacturing and the construction department.

Damien’s hobby in food hunting led him to develop his own personal food blog: www.uncletehpeng.com
His love of good food can now be shared with others!
He remains humble and remembers his roots “Never forget who are the ones that brought you up, always be thankful for what you have because behind every great person is a great mentor.”
He treasures his family and is appreciative of the freedom his parents gave him to pursue his passion.
In his own words, “I respect my parents because they work hard to provide money for me to continue my studies. The least I could do is to put in my best when it comes to my studies and not disappoint them.”
His future plans are to venture into the HR industry after his diploma.
