The route to Specialist in Blood Banking and Master of Science in Transfusion Medicine

Would you resign from your job, empty your bank account, leave behind all that is familiar and travel 14800 km across the world to upgrade yourself professionally? Er Lay See found herself facing all these life-changing questions, twelve years after graduating from Singapore Polytechnic. It is this brave leap that led Lay See to her current employment as a Quality Coordinator in Transfusion Science at Puget Sound Blood Center in Seattle, USA.

Lay See started as a generalist at Tan Tock Seng Hospital upon graduation from the Diploma in Biomedical Science (previously known as Diploma in Biotechnology, Medical Technology option). The next twelve years at TTSH saw Lay See moved from general to blood banking laboratory and complete a degree programme in UK.

It was at an American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) meeting in 2005 that inspired Lay See to pursue a Specialist in Blood Banking certification. Awarded by the American Society for Clinical Pathology, this is a professional certification for medical laboratory scientists working in blood banking laboratories in USA.

Lay See’s fondest memory of her SP experience was the internship program which gave her the confidence to be competent in the field of Clinical Laboratory Science especially Blood Banking.

“My SP education gave me a strong foundation in Clinical Laboratory Science and most important of all, it prepared me extremely well for further tertiary education in Transfusion Medicine.”
