Singapore Polytechnic Changes Board Chairman After 12 Years

Four of six new board members are SP alumni


30 March 2012, SingaporeA new Board of Governors (BOG) for Singapore Polytechnic (SP) will be appointed on 1 April 2012.  The outgoing Chairman, Mr Tan Kay Yong having dedicated 12 years of distinguished service, will retire on 31 March 2012. The incoming Chairman, Mr Bill Chang, Executive Vice President of Business Group, SingTel will helm the board. Six new members will also come on board on 1 April 2012.     

Mr Tan took over as Chairman on 1 October 2000 and is the first SP diploma alumnus to have served his Alma Mater in this capacity. During his tenure, Mr Tan steered the Polytechnic in nurturing students to be work-ready, world-ready and life-ready.  He took personal interest in the holistic development of the students, creating a student-centric campus and building technical capabilities.  He envisioned SP to leave global footprints through the export of niche training programmes and consultancy services and offering SP's brand of technology-based education globally through the establishment of Singapore Polytechnic International.  He is also well remembered for propelling SP in the frontiers of design, making Design Thinking a hallmark of SP graduates and establishing the SP Design School.

The incoming Chairman Mr Chang is also an alumnus of SP.  He has been serving as the Deputy Chairman of the Board since 1 April 2009. Mr Chang joined the Singapore Polytechnic Board in April 2003.  After graduating with the Diploma in Electrical Engineering from SP in 1986, Mr Chang went on to obtain a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours in Electrical & Computer Systems Engineering) from Monash University, Australia in 1990. 

Mr Chang is armed with many years of experience in the Info-Communication Technology (ICT) industry and is recognised for his strong leadership, corporate achievements, key contribution to the ICT industry and involvement in the community. He has been working with SingTel since 2005 as the Executive Vice President of Business Group. Prior to that, he was the Managing Director of Advanced Services Group, Asia Pacific Operations at Cisco Systems (USA). Mr Chang also served on the Board of Workforce Development Authority for six years until 2011. For his contributions to Singapore’s workforce development, Mr Chang was conferred the National Day Public Service Medal Award in 2007.

Mr Chang takes on the role as Chairman of SP BOG on 1 April 2012.  Six new members have been appointed to the Board. Four of whom are also graduates of SP. The four are Mr Chia Boon Kuah, Chief Operating Officer & Executive Director (Property Sales Business Group) Far East Organization, Ms Chong Phit Lian, Chief Executive Officer Singbridge Holdings Pte Ltd, Mr Goh Teik Poh, President, South Asia Region, APL Co Pte Ltd, and Mr Allan Yeo Hwee Tiong, President (Singapore & Vietnam), Thomson Medical Pte Ltd. The other two new members who will be joining the Board are Ms Amanda Chen, Managing Director, Bank Morgan Stanley AG and AC Tan Chye Hee, Director, Police Intelligence Department, Singapore Police Force.
