DAC Top Graduate Awarded Full Sembcorp Group Scholarship
SP Business School’s Diploma in Accountancy (DAC) top graduate Iwan Yuliyanto shares his story with us. When Iwan first arrived alone in Singapore in 2006 from Indonesia to pursue the Diploma in Accountancy course in Singapore Polytechnic (SP), he was disheartened that his applications were rejected by the other 4 polytechnics in Singapore.
Coming from a single parent family, Iwan drew his strength from his love for his mother, whom he sees as a “strong wonder woman” who gives her all in raising Iwan and his sister through poverty. During his 3 years of studies in SP, Iwan supported himself by working part-time almost every day, juggling between school and work. Despite all the difficulties, Iwan went on to shine in SP. He was a student leader and was placed on the Business School’s honour roll for 3 consecutive years of studies. He further emerged as the top graduate in his cohort, grabbing the ICPAS gold medal and ACCA prize.
Currently a 2nd year student in NTU Bachelor of Accountancy degree programme and a Sembcorp Group scholar, Iwan continues to excel by scoring a perfect GPA of 5.0 in his first semester at Nanyang Business School. He also has a string of appointments in various clubs and committees in NTU. Iwan is currently the President of the Nanyang Business School Exchange Club. The NTU Tax Advisory Club (TAC), of which Iwan is the financial controller, will be for organising its second national wide tax Competition that is open to students of all tertiary institutions in Singapore. As the ex-Vice-Chairman of NTU hall 13 Charity Project, Iwan was also responsible for a successful fund-raising exercise to sponsor a Children’s home.
“My mother is a strong wonder woman. She amazes me. She is not highly educated but she is able to raise her 2 children up. Her depression did not stop her from being a caring and loving mother. She deserves an irreplaceable place in my life. She walked me and my sister though poverty. Her sacrifice for me is priceless. That is why I promised myself to be the best I can be and I want her to be proud of this son, because I am who she has sacrificed for.
I love my mom.”
