New Digital Media Diplomas Launch a Blast!

What better way to experience the wonders of digital animation and visual effects than to watch the latest 3D animated movie at the cinema and find out how that it was made? That’s exactly what happened at the launch of DMIT’s two new diplomas in digital media, Diploma in Digital Animation and Diploma in Visual Effects and Motion Graphics on 19th November 2009. Upper secondary students island-wide as well as some of DMIT’s Diploma in Digital Media students and industry guests were invited to a free “Making of Astro Boy” talk conducted by Mr. Kinson Cheung, Training Manager at Imagi Studios, the Hong Kong-based animation company which produced the movie, followed by the full movie screening at a packed Filmgarde Iluma, Bugis.

Dr. Timothy Chan, Director of the School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology, in his opening speech touched on the need to make learning fun and to experience learning beyond the classroom. “To make learning fun, it has to be real. A lot of learning in Singapore Polytechnic is outside the classroom, in the real world. That’s one of the reason we organized today’s event. Apart from having events like this, we send our students to animation and effects companies to gain valuable industry experience.”

It’s not surprising then that the students who attended the event, like second year DDM student David Ng Jun Ju, agreed. “I think it’s pretty cool to have the lesson in the cinema. It’s much more comfortable and the screen is huge compared to the typical classroom. I look forward to more of the out-of-classroom experience in my lessons.” Clara Wan Mei Yoke, a third year DDM student offered, “It’s a unique experience because it’s not everyday we get to have learning outside the classroom. The ‘making of’ segment was very useful as normally when you watch a movie you just see the end result, but this way you get to see how it’s all done.” She also enjoyed the movie very much, “The Astro Boy movie was great because you get to feel the emotions of the 3D characters. The animators did a really good job!”

Mr. Cheung explains how effective the medium can be and why digital animation is fun. “Because you can create something from nothing. Actually, what you need is just a computer. You’re creating a world. You can make people, you can entertain people, you can make people laugh, you can make people cry. You can deliver the message. You can teach people what to do, so it’s really powerful. When you can do that, it’s a lot of fun because you can put your philosophy into the movie and help everybody to get it.”
