Empowering the SMEs with Enterprise Class Systems

Singapore Polytechnic on 1 December 2009 signed a Memorandum of Co-operation (MOC) with technology giant Microsoft Singapore, and CyanSYS Pte Ltd, a Microsoft Gold Certified Dynamics NAV partner that is focused on helping SMEs in the region to plan and deploy their Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solutions.

Students from the School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology (DMIT), especially those from the Diploma in Information Technology (DIT), will benefit tremendously from this partnership which will equip them with a strong foundation in IT skills, broad business capabilities and hands-on training in real-world enterprise business processes using Microsoft Dynamics NAV, a leading ERP solution for businesses.

“As a Singapore Polytechnic alumnus with more than 20 years of industry experience, I understand the value and importance of getting hands-on training and real-world scenarios to enable new graduates to be workforce-ready,” said Mr Tan Theng Wee, Chief Executive Officer, CyanSYS.

As a gesture of goodwill and contribution to his alma mater, CyanSYS has generously sponsored one scholarship valued at $4500 to be awarded to a deserving DIT (Enterprise Systems option) student with outstanding academic achievements and leadership qualities.

There are currently 25 DMIT students enrolled in the Business Management Solutions (BMS) free elective module which will prepare them for the Microsoft Dynamics NAV – Trade and Inventory certification. Dayana Binte Jaslim, a year 2 DIT student said, “With the Microsoft Dynamics NAV certification, it will definitely make me more marketable and improve my chances of being hired.”

The tripartite party has also jointly set up the Business-Ready Infocomm Solutions Centre to support the teaching and learning of Enterprise Systems. Students will work on Microsoft’s enterprise applications at the centre, and it will also be used as a test-bed for new business management solutions-related software and applications. Moreover, this MOC aims to provide DIT students with industry projects development and internship opportunities, both locally and overseas.

In conjunction with the MOC signing, a seminar “Empowering the SMEs with Enterprise Class Systems” was held. Speakers from Microsoft, CyanSYS and Best Denki, one of CyanSYS’ key customers shared their experiences in deploying ERP systems.

About Enterprise Systems Option

According to the recent Gartner report, the enterprise software market in Singapore is forecasted to grow by 8.7% in Singapore and by 10.2% in Asia Pacific next year. The compounded annual growth rate during the next 5 years is projected at 9.9%. All this is despite the fact that the whole world is only beginning to walk out of the global financial crisis. With the growth in the enterprise software market next year, our IT students can look forward to an exciting career in this industry.

The Enterprise Systems option, in the Diploma in Information Technology, aims to produce graduates with a strong foundation in IT skills with the necessary business processes and enterprise knowledge. They will be able to appreciate how IT is used to enhance the information flow amongst the customers, vendors and employees in an organisation. Graduates from this option will be able to translate business problems into feasible IT solutions. This option will also prepare students to enter the workforce by exposing them to a suite of ERP software.
