A Trail of Fun and Discovery at DMIT

21 March 2011

Written by Jackie Tan, DDM Year 1

On Friday, 11 March 2011, seven secondary schools, namely Chua Chu Kang, CHIJ Katong, XinMin, Bukit Batok, Woodgroove, Hua Yi and Kent Ridge participated in [email protected], an event organized by SP School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology (DMIT).

As the event’s title suggests, iDiscover means the student (I) will learn (Discover) about DMIT and what our school has to offer!

The secondary school students were excited and energetic as they alighted from the bus which brought them to SP. They were then ushered to Lecture Theatre 8 (MLT8) and seated according to their schools.

DMIT STARs welcomed and ushered the
students to MLT8.

Not long after, the emcees began by welcoming everyone to DMIT before going through the programme of the day.

DMIT Deputy Director, Ms Shirley Ngiam then gave a short speech to welcome Ms Dana Lim, the guest speaker from iDA. The talk by iDA was followed by a sharing session by our student Chi Kok Pin, who has won the Integrated Infocomm Scholarship.

Kok Pin shared some interesting anecdotes as he talked about his experience in SP. Some students were seen chuckled away as they listened intently to his stories.

Time for a trail! The students from the various schools were split into two groups, where one group would visit SP Convention Centre (SPCC) to view the display of Final Year Projects (FYP) by the Digital Media courses’ students.

The other group would go to The Hall, where the FYP projects of the IT courses were displayed. As the students walked to the exhibits and back to MLT8, our friendly tour guides (DMIT STARs!) gave them a tour about the places of interests as they walked past them, including areas like Food Court 5 where Subway, KFC and Starbucks were found.

Everyone returned to the T19 foyer near MLT 8 where they were treated with refreshments!

As everyone scrambled for food, “backstage” unfold a different story; the seniors were anxiously getting ready for their presentation which was next in the programme. There were three presentations, from a spread of different courses offered by DMIT. Each group of participants would attend two out of the three presentations.

The participants had a great time as they enjoyed the interaction with the presenters. They had a glimpse of the process involved in making the projects, and tried their hands on the final products!

After the project presentations given by the seniors, it was the quiz and prize award – the last segment of the day. In the quiz were questions asked about the knowledge they have gained in the entire trail. The winners of the quiz went home with movie tickets given to every member of the group!

Secondary school students were very active in the quiz segment.

As a parting word, we extended our invitation by asking them to join the DMIT Grad Show later in the evening where there would be animation, movies, visual effects and live band performances. The school teachers whom we talked to said they liked the programme lined up and would like to see more of such events in the future!
