Talk by Haruhiko Mikimoto

25 November 2011

It was a night of inspiration for aspiring manga artists at the Fusionopolis as 10 students from SP’s Diploma in Digital Animation attended a talk by renowned manga artist Haruhiko Mikimoto and the director of Kadokawa Shoten Publishing, Hideaki Kobayashi.

Mr Mikimoto, the man behind well-known animes Super Dimension Fortress Macross and Gundam is a highly-regarded character designer from Japan.  Kadokawa Shoten,  the company under Mr Kobayashi has published several popular manga titles including Haruhi Suzumiya and Neon Genesis Evangelion, as well as a good number of ongoing manga magazines.

With the help of a Japanese-English translator, our students learnt from the two veterans about the hard work and career paths undertaken by Manga artists & Anime illustrators. They also explained the purpose of the publishing companies behind the establishment of Manga and Anime. The students then learned about the artists’ intention to support the promising manga communities and publishers outside of Japan, such as in Singapore, and their expectations for a future international co-production.

Overall, it was a very enriching experience for the students as they got to learn more about their possible future paths as manga artists and receive advice and autographs from Mr Mikimoto, despite the language barrier
