Our team comprises of 4 members, Nicholas Toh Zuan Jie, Chua Sihao, Kenneth Ho Chee Chong and myself, Jason Sim Meng Kiat. Nicholas is a graduate of the Diploma in Information Security Management (DISM
) course, while Chua Sihao, Kenneth Ho Chee Chong and I are graduates of the Diploma in Information Technology (DIT
) course. We participated in Oracle ThinkQuest 2012 (a competition which garnered more than 5600 entries worldwide) and came in 2nd under the Application Development category. Our winning entry is a web and mobile application called Frevol Friends (which means friends volunteer friends).
We were invited to attend a sponsored trip by Oracle to ThinkQuest Live 2012 awards ceremony during October, which was held at Oracle Headquarters, USA, San Francisco. The 4 of us (Sihao, Kenneth, me and our coach, Mr Low Jin Kiat) went for the trip, except for Nicholas (currently serving National Service and was unable to attend the event) to receive the awards.
In San Francisco, we had the opportunity to attend workshops on leadership and mentoring sessions chaired by Oracle executives. The organising committee also planned excursions to famous landmarks in San Francisco such as the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge, Twin Peaks, the California Academy of Sciences, and of course Oracle Campus. Through interactions and bonding sessions with the other international student winners, our team also experienced the rich culture diversity of other students from countries such as France, Greece, India, USA and Puerto Rico.
The highlight of the trip was of course the Awards dinner, which was attended by Oracle top executives, academics and a congress representative. There our team was honoured and we received the runner-up trophy. We also won for ourselves a Mac Book Air each.
Overall, we had a fun and fulfilling experience in USA. It was an eye-opening and enriching educational experience for us and something we would remember for a long time.
The sentiment is shared by my team members. Recalling the events which took place in USA, Kenneth said "The ThinkQuest Live have provided me with a once in a lifetime experience as I am able to meet and mingle with people from different countries. It was fascinating to be able to share our ideas and cultural differences with people from so many different countries at once."
"Having the opportunity to attend the ThinkQuest Live event at San Francisco was indeed an eye-opener. The experiences and lessons that it had enriched with me would be invaluable knowledge to have in the future.", added Si Hao.
Finally, it is very honourable to be able to represent Singapore Polytechnic in the Oracle ThinkQuest 2012. And we are very grateful to Mr Low for spending so much effort in guiding and mentoring us for this project. We are very glad to have such a wonderful coach like him.
