Young Thinkers Challenge

29 September 2015

To mark SAP’s 25th anniversary in Singapore, SAP, in collaboration with IDA, launched a Young Thinkers Program, aimed to spark the interest of youths in Infocomm Technology, and to prepare them for an education and career in this exciting arena.

The experiential learning program aims to help youths understand the extraordinary revolution brought about by Big Data today and its impact on societies, businesses and everyday life. Through design thinking workshops, these students will be introduced to an ideation methodology in solving complex problems. Using SAP Lumira Analytics tool, the students gained hands on practical experience to visualise and turn data into useful information.

This program was be delivered jointly by SAP employees and student volunteers of tertiary institutions in Singapore, including 17 of our very own SP DMIT students. Together with the teachers, the volunteers coached the younger students at the Infocomm Clubs at secondary schools and junior colleges in the first half of 2015. This culminated in a boot camp, followed by the competition judging during the Young Tech Fest @ Suntec on the 8th and 9th of September 2015 respectively.

Below, one of our student volunteers, Lance, shares his story.
That’s me, Lance (leftmost, going counter clockwise), my friends from SP, Chee Xiong and Adriel; with our new friends Jessica, SAP University Alliance Manager, Rin and Jamie who are SAP interns from TP and NUS respectively
During December last year, SAP was looking for student volunteer to assist them in their Young Thinker Program (YTP) in preparation for the Young Thinker Challenge which is part of the annual IDA National Infocomm Challenge. Excited to take on new challenges and meet new friends, I accepted this opportunity.

On 5-6 January this year, SAP held its Train-The-Trainer program. During this program, volunteers from the 5 local Polytechnics and 3 Universities, learn about Design Thinking, Big Data and Data Analytics using SAP Lumira. During this two day workshop, I have learnt a lot along with the other volunteers and was prepared to teach the secondary school students. Below are some photos from the session.

On the 8th of September, the trainers from SP (myself, Chee Xiong and Adriel) NP’s Trainers as well as SAP Interns, help out at the boot camp where teams fine-tune their infographic as well as their presentation. In the end the 6 finalist are from Raffles Institution, NUS High, Sembawang Secondary, Crescent Girls’ School, CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’ and Temasek Junior College.

Conclusion

During this 10 month long journey, I have learnt a lot from both SAP, their staff and fellow trainers from other institutions. I have learnt how Big Data can change our lives and how to utilise the tools like SAP Lumira to show important insights. I am also honoured to be certified as SAP Student Ambassador, as SAP is a great company. Also seeing how the secondary students were interested in IT, I felt that it was fulfilling teaching them and will definitely volunteer if there is another chance were to come.
