We are proud to feature Serene Koh Sze Chiah, our Business School graduate who is the recipient of a prestigious scholarship from the Monetary Authority of Singapore to pursue a Master of Finance at Cambridge University in September 2012. Serene graduated from Singapore Polytechnic with a Diploma in Business Administration programme in 2006. She has made huge strides since graduating as our top business student in 2006.
Graduating in 1998 with a PSLE score which admitted her to the Normal Academic Stream in Broadrick Secondary School meant that she was among the lower aggregate scores. However this temporary setback did not deter Serene from persevering to achieve her dreams. She shares her journey with us.
“As the top O-level student in Broadrick Secondary School, I had the option of enrolling in one of the popular junior colleges. However, Singapore Polytechnic was my first choice as I had heard much from seniors that the lecturers in the Business School were very dedicated.
Joining the SP School of Business is the best decision I have ever made in my life. I am forever indebted to the SP School of Business and its lecturers and directors, Dr Timothy Chan and Mr. Maheantharan.
There are many lecturers who have made a great difference in my life. As a student in SB, the lecturers spent many hours after lessons to coach me. I felt that I may have appeared to be “an irritating student” with a long list of "whys and hows". Surprisingly, the lecturers were very patient with me. It is truly their dedication that encouraged me to be passionate about what I do and learn.
Some of them who have made a mark in my life are Mr. Tang Kah Heong, Ms Olivia Koh, Mr. Ben Cho, Mr. Conrad de Souza and Ms. Wang Pheck Hoon. The list is endless as there were many other SB lecturers who taught me and made a huge impact in my life.
Serene Koh at University of Cambridge
The course structure and syllabus in the Diploma of Business Administration programme has helped me tremendously in my education at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Equipped with a good diploma, my university education was smooth. I had a headstart in every module. In fact, it was easy to ace the projects in NUS as most modules had been covered in SB.
Mr. Tang Kah Heong is one lecturer who has given me a lot of support and advice even after I graduated. He keeps in touch constantly with students even after our graduation and has been of great help to me.
I was awarded a scholarship by the Singapore Exchange Ltd (SGX) for my undergraduate studies at NUS. I graduated with a Degree in Business Administration (Finance) Honours in 2010 and worked as a Corporate Finance Regulator with the Singapore Exchange Limited.
As a Christian, I believe that it is the grace of God that helped me to clinch the scholarship to pursue my masters in Cambridge. However, I also recognize that the pivotal role SP Business School has played in my life.”
We in SP Business School are pleased to share in your success!
