The Direct Polytechnic Admission (DPA) Programme in Singapore Polytechnic (SP) allows Singapore Polytechnic flexibility to select students on criteria other than GCE 'O'-Level results, thus allowing a wider range of talents to be recognised. Students who are interested in, and who have the aptitude for applied learning are selected through an interview process to obtain places in SP prior to taking their GCE ‘O’-Level examinations.
At Singapore Polytechnic, our DPA students benefit from a preparatory programme which begins before the actual start of the academic year in April. These students are given orientation to the polytechnic and engage in bonding camps. These students also begin studying the General Education modules which are compulsory for all students regardless of discipline. They are part of the holistic learning that we offer in SP.
Like a kaleidoscope which allows the viewer to see a constantly changing set of colours, we see the colourful images of DPA students who come to SP Business School and get educated, equipped and energised before they leave to fulfil their dreams. Gauging from the responses of the various students, the polytechnic preparatory programme is exciting and a good start to their new educational environment.
Siti Natasha Basharahil binte Salim, Diploma in International Business, 1st year student
“My DPA experience has been fun. The friendships I have forged with my fellow DPA class mates is enduring. We share notes and even textbooks as we study common subjects and as timetabled, these modules are taught at alternate semesters for different diplomas.”
Natasha was admitted to the Diploma in International Business under the DPA programme. Sharing the same passion as her father who is a businessman in the textile business, Natasha demonstrated her passion by accompanying him on business trips board. She hopes to join the family business once equipped with the skills gained in the Diploma in International Business.
Eunice Ng, Diploma in Business Administration, 2nd year student
“When I first applied for the DPA programme, I didn’t pin much hope on getting in as there are many other students out there applying for the same polytechnic and course. However after going through the panel interview and submitting the relevant documents, being notified that I got accepted via DPA, I was really elated to be in this “direct” path to my polytechnic education.
I chose SP because it is the oldest and most reputable polytechnic in Singapore, since it carries our country’s name. It is also convenient since it is linked to the MRT. The course that I am in also provides a good range of modules from year 1 to 3 which attracted me to SP. SP has taught me to be sociable and approachable. It is great to have lecturers who are constantly monitoring and guiding their students. It ensures that we, as students really get to learn and apply what we’ve learnt.”
Shawn Tay, Diploma in Business Administration, 2nd year
“I yearned to experience the life of being a poly student – freedom and independence, a school life and yet…gain a head start. Getting into a business course is competitive and since I got a place, I took it!
Besides convenience, my sister, a former SP student, inspired me with her positive comments on SP. Activities such as the Overseas Immersion Program, a countless variety of CCAs to choose from, its facilities and all the other boundless opportunities given to my sister eventually made me more inclined and optimistic about joining SP.
My experience in SP Business School has instilled in me many pertinent skills and knowledge which are beneficial towards my future endeavours. As Vice-President of the Entrepreneurial Leadership Club, I learnt the importance of teamwork and responsibility. Through project discussions, I learnt flexibility, and even took the initiative to express opinions in solving disagreements and problems faced.
My club took part in the Youth Entrepreneurs Competition, YOUTHPHORIA 2012 organized by Singapore Discovery Centre last year and we clinched the top prize for “Best in Digital Marketing & Social Media” as well as “1st Runner Up” for the overall competition. That was awesome!”
SP wishes them the best in their future endeavours.
