What are your best memories of your three years in Singapore Polytechnic
For me, it was definitely the times I spent with the friends whom I have had the opportunity to meet in Singapore Polytechnic. The first group of friends I want to talk about are my classmates. Being an Accounting student means that we are given the luxury of being with the same group of people for classmates for your entire course and that had really helped us forged many wonderful experiences and memories together. We were always together, from having lunch together daily to frantic days with projects and assignment to class chalets, having fun and working hard as a class and helping each other out.
And the second group of friends I want to talk about that helped defined my experience in Singapore Polytechnic are my lecturers. You might think why I consider my lecturers as my friends and that is because they really do feel like friends to me. The lecturers not only teach, but they interact with you like friends would. There are no barriers of communications, no formalities to observe when meeting my lecturers which make it easy to approach them just like meeting your friends. They take effort to know you as a person and use that knowledge to enhance their teaching approaches. It was only because of my course manager and beloved lecturer, Miss Tan Yen Yen, that I found out about this scholarship after she encouraged me to go for it as she thinks it suits me to work in a small medium enterprise (SME) due to my personality and the only reason she knew that was because she takes time to understand and profile her students so that she would be able to provide the students with the opportunities that are the right fit for them. I will forever remember the countless of hours spent in Miss Tan’s office with a bunch of course mates just chitchatting about anything under the sun during our long breaks. My Polytechnic experience would not have been complete and memorable has it not been for the lecturers.
What are the attractions of working in an SME that made you apply for the scholarship
I believe that my personality is more suited towards working for a small medium enterprise than working for a multinational company. I like the family culture present in most of the SMEs and the flat organizational structure which can enable me to interact with people from all level of the organization from top-level management to operation staffs unbounded by hierarchy. I also like the lack of unneeded bureaucracy. In addition, I find satisfaction from contributing to the growth of a company to greater heights, just like watching a seedling grow into a big tree.
I understand that you are now working in GreenPac as an intern. What does Greenpac do and what are some of the most interesting aspects of this experience?
Greenpac is a packaging company that offers their customers a total packaging solution, that is eco-friendly and sustainable, for their products through innovation. Greenpac constantly help their clients achieve bottom-line savings by reducing the weight of the packaging and the waste generated by creating products that are thinner, lighter but not sacrifice on durability.
One of the most interesting aspects of this experience is the culture here at Greenpac. Everyone is regarded as part of the “Greenpac family”. We cook and eat lunch together here almost every day. This is because our Chief Executive Office, Ms Susan Chong, advocates that the company can only achieve great things if the people work together as a family. She, of course, leads by example by taking part in the cooking which was a shocker for me to see as it is very rare to see someone of her stature and status cooking together with us.
Another interesting aspect of this experience is the work itself. You are at the forefront of packaging innovation, and that itself, is pretty exciting to me. To see constant innovation in our products to better provide our clients with packaging solution that adds value to their product is satisfying for me.
I would definitely encourage future SP students to come and join Greenpac for internship if there is a chance!
