Hard skills in hot demand next year
The Straits Times, 16 Dec 2014 - Article reported that workers with hard skills in areas such as engineering and information technology will be in big demand next year, as the economy continues its restructuring towards a skill-based one. According to recruiters and headhunters, employers are willing to pay more for skilled engineers that can help the firm turn to automation to raise productivity as the demand for automation engineers is outstripping supply. Engineers with a minimum of five years’ experience can earn between $5,000 to $6,000. Fresh university graduates with an engineering degree can expect an average starting salary of $3,300 to $3,600. Software developers are also in demand as not many Singaporeans are experienced in tech product development. The average starting salary for a software developer is between $3,300 to $3,500 while those with a minimum of five years’ experience can draw between $5,000 to $7,000.
