Scouting for engineering courses after the ‘O’ Levels at Singapore Polytechnic (SP) Open House, I came across a portable water treatment kit displayed in the auditorium. Before I knew it, I was asking questions regarding the course during the Open House. It led me to enroll for the Diploma in Environmental Management & Water Technology course in SP.

The three years quickly began with learning, building and operating a water treatment kit that was show-cased during the SP Open House. We learnt water and environment-related modules and also some construction modules. But what made the course interesting were the numerous mini-projects: for example, make a video, build a bridge structure or collection and testing of water samples. Not forgetting the Final Year Project (FYP) that lasted one and a half years! It wasn’t easy to start off but our group of three members with the guidance of our supervisor, Ms Tracy Law, successfully completed it .

Apart from our studies, we participated in events and competitions such as the Singapore International Water Festival, Living aRRRt from Urban Waste Competition and the National Climate Change Competition. These events broadened our perspective and knowledge that was taught in class.

Being the School of Architecture & the Built Environment (ABE) Ambassador, I got the chance to help out and organize events such as the SP Open House, International Friendship Day, and ABE’s very first GRC Day for the cleaners. These experiences gave me the opportunity to work with others from ABE outside of my course.

Three years in SP have surely passed by quickly. I guess it is true when they say “time flies when you are having fun”. I don’t regret stepping into SP Open House spotting that water treatment kit. It was because of that I enjoyed the years in ABE and SP, and forged many friendships with my fellow students and the lecturers who aided us in projects and school work. A BIG shout out to all my friends, lecturers, FYP group mates and FYP Supervisor. Thank You to all of you.
