Singapore Polytechnic Choir Wins Silver Award at the International Choral Competition

SP Choir looks to scale greater heights in the near future

By Miss Deepika K R, Treasurer Singapore Polytechnic Choir

The Singapore Polytechnic Choir, founded in 1984, has been growing steadily over the years. Besides the usual in-campus concerts, public concerts, etc., the choir also made musical tours to New Zealand, Australia and Greece.

As part of her 21st Anniversary celebrations this year, the choir gave a public concert "Sonata" in March. With the appointment of her new choral director, Mr Francis Liew, in June, she gave a 2nd concert "Dawn of Voices" in November to a "sold-out" audience.

Besides creating history by giving two public concerts in a year, the choir set another milestone. From 9 - 13 December 2005, the Singapore Polytechnic Choir went on to compete in "A Voyage of Songs 2005" - an international choral competition, in Shah Alam, Malaysia. Sharing the centre stage with thirty-three renowned choirs of fine choral traditions from as far away as Estonia, the choir did the institution proud in her first competition by achieving a Silver Award in the "Open Mixed Category".

All these would not have been possible without the guidance of our choral director and the commitment, determination and perseverance of the student leaders and members.

Having started the ball rolling, the choir hopes to scale greater heights in the near future. Programmes such as concerts and an overseas competition in 2006 are already in the pipeline.

Do look out for future announcements!
