5 July 2006 was a joyous occasion for 58 staff from Cheers who graduated with a Certificate of Performance in Convenience Store Operations. The graduation ceremony held at Singapore Polytechnic was witnessed by guests from Singapore Workforce Development Agency, Cheers, NTUC FairPrice, FairPrice Training Institute and Singapore Polytechnic. Mr Tan Kian Chew, Group CEO of NTUC Fairprice and Chairman Cheers, presented awards to the top participants from each of the three batches of participants who graduated.
The Department of Industry Services and the School of Business of Singapore Polytechnic together with partner Knack! Pte Ltd helped local convenience store chain, Cheers by FairPrice, conduct the “I am an Entrepreneur!” scheme for its staff. The scheme allows for a Cheers store to be run as if it is owned by the staff. Selected staff from Cheers will be given the opportunity to gain ownership of a Cheers convenience store by converting from employee to operator.
Profit sharing for managers of individual stores will be based on sales, turn around and net profit. Staff who meet or exceed their targets can expect to be rewarded with up to three levels of incentives.
The 58 Cheers staff were taught by lecturers from the School of Business and Knack! Pte Ltd. During the 5-day modular course, participants learnt the mindset and character of an Entrepreneur. Other topics covered included cost control, inventory control, visual merchandising and store operations.
Assistant Store Manager (Cheers at Haig Road) Salleh Bin Abdul Ghafar said, “The course was an eye opener for me, I would like to thank Cheers for sending me on this course. I thought retail was simple, but when I went in-depth into the subject, I found that there was a lot to learn. I hope to one day to be an entrepreneur.”
SP congratulates all 58 graduates and wishes them all the best in their future endeavours.
