Recognition allows SP to host regional and international sporting meets.
Singapore Polytechnic (SP) Sports Complex's track and facilities have achieved the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) Class 2 Certification, making it the only sports complex here to receive this international recognition. Presently, no athletic facilities in Singapore have attained this certification or higher.
Recently upgraded at the cost of $1 million, the 15-year-old sports complex will now be able to host international events such as Continental, Regional and Area Championships and International Invitation Meetings specifically authorised by IAAF.
The IAAF sets an international standard for various products used in athletics from implements to track surfaces. IAAF has a world-wide responsibility to guarantee the validity and accuracy of performances and therefore of all products, which help athletes achieve these performances.
Among the features of the upgraded SP Sports Complex is an eight lane synthetic running track, two shot put rings/ hammer throw cages, two pole vault troughs and the extension of an existing long jump run-up by eight metres.
