WorldSkills Singapore 2006: Agility. Creativity. Excellence.
WorldSkills Singapore 2006 (WSS 2006) is the seventh in the series of biennial skills competitions organised by the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), in conjunction with the five Polytechnics. Conducted since 1994, the WSS aims to:
- Promote the image and status of technical/skilled personnel in Singapore, and accord recognition to the special talents and skills of our youths;
- Raise the standard of excellence in technical skills through competition;
- Generate greater public awareness and interest in technical education; and
- Select highly-skilled youths to represent Singapore at international skills competitions.
Since 1995, WSS winners who were selected to represent Singapore in the international WorldSkills Competition had done Singapore proud, consistently bettering their performance with each competition, resulting in an improved medal tallies ranking for Singapore.
At the 38th WorldSkills Competition held in Helsinki, Finland in May 2005, the 11-member Singapore team brought home two Golds, a Bronze and three Diplomas of Excellence. Singapore's medal ranking was 12th among the 38 participating economies. In terms of average score, Singapore scored well and was placed fifth.
WSS 2006 was held in July 2006 at ITE College West (Balestier Campus), and offered competition in 12 skills areas. The winners of WSS 2006 will stand the chance of being selected to participate in the 39th WorldSkills Competition, to be held in Shizuoka, Japan, in November 2007. SP students did the institution proud with their haul of medals.
