Over $2.5 million boost in maritime education

Singapore Poly launches On-line Learning Portal to support growing maritime industry in Asia Pacific and South Asia in partnership with Teledata Marine Solutions

Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) of Singapore Polytechnic has launched a new initiative that will strengthen Singapore's global position as a maritime hub in the region. SMA, in partnership with Teledata Marine Solutions (TMS), will deliver Certificate of Competency On-line (CoC On-line) courses on the internet. TMS has invested over $2.5 million in this e-Learning programme.

CoC courses lead to the professional development of a seafaring officer. The competency certificates are issued by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) after the candidates have successfully passed their written examinations at SMA of Singapore Polytechnic, and pass the orals examinations conducted by the MPA.

This SMA-TMS collaboration will enable shipboard trainees to access e-learning, including real-time interaction with tutors . Students will be able to gain the knowledge and understanding essential to obtaining the certificates of competency required for the positions they seek to achieve.

For maritime students, the benefits of e-leaning include access to materials at any time and at any place. These educational materials are tailored to suit the individual's needs and will be quickly updated to disseminate latest shipping industry developments. Both student and tutor will be kept informed of their progress through the advanced learning management system developed by SMA and TMS. Each student will have a personal portfolio showing the subjects covered and the levels achieved.
