SP Scholar Programme

The programme aims to attract outstanding "O" Level students, develop them to be leaders and equip them for top scholarships and awards in Singapore. SP Principal, Mr Low Wong Fook presented the first batch of 40 SP Scholars with their awards at an Award Presentation Ceremony on 16 May 2007. SP Scholars undergo special training in leadership, communication & interview skills, current affairs, and undertake overseas community service projects.

Leadership Training

The SP Scholars completed a special leadership training programme entitled "LeaderShape" on 13 & 14 June 2007. They were trained in various skills essential to "shape" students to become great leaders of tomorrow. These skills include event management, social graces and dining etiquette, "No Apologies" Sex Abstinence course, and leadership skills based on "The Leadership Challenge" model. Principal, Mr Low Wong Fook was also present to share valuable leadership insights with the Scholars.

The Scholars moved on to participate in "Leadership thru' Adventure" at Sungei Slim, Perak, Malaysia from 19 to 22 June. Two of the Scholars, Margaret Tan and Jerome Tan summed up their experiences as follows:

"Though most of us had expected the camp to be tough and draining, the activities, though physically challenging, unexpectedly comprised of many enjoyable elements. In addition, we walked away with a wealth of experience and knowledge, and new friendships were also forged in the interim through daily interaction."

Communication Skills Workshops

The Department of Language and Communications organised 2 workshops on 28 & 29 August to get students started on communication skills and habits that potential scholars should possess.

Workshop 1 - Be a Scholar with Substance

This workshop enables students to:

  • have a holistic view of the habits of a scholar
  • widen their perspectives on national and global issues in 2007
  • appraise and reflect on the impact these issues have on them and their environment
  • understand the significance of knowledge and their future success at scholarship interviews

Workshop 2 - Learn to Speak like a World Class Leader

This workshop enables students to:

  • understand their own strengths and weaknesses as a leader
  • understand different leadership styles and
  • examine communication strategies used by some leaders
  • practise some leadership communication strategies
  • practise effective body language for specific purposes

Future Programmes

In the line-up are an overseas community service project, on-going communication skills and current affairs training, and workshops on career planning and scholarship interviews.
