Sudoku Challenge Sees Active Participation from Staff And Students

The Department of Mathematics and Science recently held a Sudoku Challenge for SP students, with a special round for academic staff. It generated much interest among the campus population.

The champion of the SP Sudoku Challenge 2007 was Ms Amalina Basri, a second-year student from the School of Chemical and Life Sciences. She clocked an impressive 8 minutes and 9 seconds to complete the two Intermediate level puzzles in the final round that was held on 13 July. The first runner-up was Ms Oi May Lan, a first-year student from the School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, whilst the second runner-up was Ms. Christine Yeo Xin Yu, a second-year student from the School of Business.

The prizes comprised Casio graphic calculators and Pilot writing instruments, which were kindly sponsored by the respective companies. The Sudoku Challenge attracted a total of 78 students for the preliminary round that was held on 4 July. Out of the 78 participants, thirty of them made it to the final round.

There was also a special round for the teaching staff of SP, which attracted 15 participants. The winner of the special round for the teaching staff was Ms Ong Guat Choon, a lecturer from the School of Chemical and Life Sciences, whilst the first and second runner-ups were Ms Katerina Yang, also a lecturer from the School of Chemical and Life Sciences, and Mrs Tay-Ang Sok Noi, a lecturer from the Department of Mathematics and Science, respectively.
