2016 Highlights

SP DOPT Final Year students, together industry Optometrists and lecturers, conducted comprehensive eye screenings and delivered spectacles to mark World Sight Day on 13 October 2016. The project was coordinated by Optometry Giving Sight, a non-profit organisation.

Vicknaswari, Lai Jin Yeng, Clara Hin Kai Lin, Chong Zhi Qing, Yew Min Er Samantha, and Midori Clare Tan Ling Li (all from Class of 2016) have been accepted by the University of Manchester, UK to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Optometry. They are given direct entry into Year 2 of the program.

SP Optometry students and staff regularly promote the importance of eye care to the community and conduct eye screening events through active collaborations. In recognition, a plaque was presented by Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for Environment and Water Resources, and MP for Tampines GRC during the launch of SPECtacular Experience @ Tampines eye screening project.

In June 2016, together with Lion’s Club Singapore, ten SP Optometry students and staff Ms Lim Hui Shan embarked on an Overseas Community Service trip to the locals in Laos. This trip aimed to broaden students’ horizon and expose them to providing eye care for the locals. The team provided eye screenings to about 1000 people.

Congratulations to our graduating DOPT student Ho Jun Yan for having received prestigious Model Student Award at SP Excellence Award 2016.

Tan Ying Audrey (Class of 2015) has been accepted by Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland, UK to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Optometry. She is given direct entry into Year 3 of the 4-year program.

2015 Highlights

SP DOPT Final Year students students, together with NP, ITE, industry Optometrists conducted free eye screenings and delivered spectacles to mark World Sight Day on 8 October 2015. The project was coordinated by Optometry Giving Sight, a non-profit organisation.

In September 2015, 2 teams of SP DOPT lecturers and students (total of 45 students) went on Overseas Community Service trip (to provide eye screenings and spectacles) to Myanmar and Indonesia. These trips aimed to broaden student’s horizon and expose them to providing eye care for villagers and children in rural areas. SP students provided eye screenings for about 4300 people.

SP Optometry lecturer Ms Teresa Tee delivering a speech on ‘Ultra-wide field retinal imaging’ during the 1st Singapore Optometric Association (SOA) conference held at SP Convention Centre on 29 and 30 September 2015. The conference was organised by SOA while the tertiary institutions acted as co-organisers. Many Optometry students benefitted enormously through networking and listening to national and international optometry and business experts.

Associate Professor Andrew Metha (Left), Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences of the University of Melbourne, delivered a didactic lecture on ‘functional imaging of human retinal capillary beds’ to the final-year Optometry students at Singapore Polytechnic on 18 August 2015.

SP DOPT Final Year Students worked with students from Diploma in Nutrition Health & Wellness to provide comprehensive eye examinations and activities for seniors from Fei Yue Senior Activity Centre on 3 July 2015.
Spectacle frames were kindly donated by our industry partner, Visual Mass.
Through this activity, students gained the experience in working with elderly as well as the chance in giving back to the community.

In a graduate Optometry meeting jointly organised by the Singapore Optometric Association (SOA) and the polytechnics on 9th March 2015, Amelia Tay (Class of 2015) was awarded the SOA ‘Book Prize’, by Dr Koh Liang Hwee (SOA president).

Dr Cham Kwang Meng, SP Optometry alumnus, currently a Lecturer at the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences of the University of Melbourne, delivered didactic lecture to the Optometry students at Singapore Polytechnic on 2 Jan 2015.

2014 Highlights

SP Optometry lecturers contributed five scientific research posters and an oral presentation at the 5th ASEAN Optometric Conference. The conference was organised by the Singapore Optometric Association on 13 and 14 November 2014.

Close to 2,000 cabbies will get free eye checks and half-priced spectacles from Oct 20 till Dec 6. This is part of the second phase of the Taxi Drivers Eye Care Ambassador Programme, organised by optics company Essilor, the National Taxi Association (NTA) and other health and optometry bodies including SP Optometry Centre.
The event was kick-started by Minster of State for Health Dr Lam Pin Min.

SP Optometry Centre (SPOC) teamed up with Health Promotion Board to offer comprehensive eye screening to mature workers from cleaning industry. Ministers Lim Swee Say and Heng Chee How visited SPOC on 25 Sep 2014 to grace the event.

In September 2014, DOPT staff and students spent 13 days in Surabaya, Indonesia, participating in the annual vision screening 'Gift of Sight'.
This overseas community service aims to expose students to different environment and provide primary eye care in rural settings.
