2017 Highlights

National Healthcare Group (NHG) organized the Dietician's Day on 8 March 2017 at Ang Mo Kio Polyclinic. It was a great exposure for the 24 DNHW students involved. Together with the NHG dietitians, the DNHW students shared with the public of all ages on the healthy eating habits. The theme for this year was "Eat A Rainbow", encouraging the daily consumption of 2 servings of fruits and vegetables of a variety of colours. Students also led some interactive games to engage the public and to provide a better understanding of the healthy eating habits.

2016 Highlights

DNHW Year 3 students Lim Pei Ying and Heather Chiam has returned to Singapore after completing the overseas internship program at Curtin University in Australia. Here is what they have to say:

“The experience was truly rewarding. As research assistants, we developed our analytical skills and honed our communication skills. We were also very privileged to attend this year’s Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA)’s Symposium which widened our perspectives towards career in dietetics and nutrition, and inspired us further on the importance of good nutrition on health. The opportunity to assist the university students in conducting a nutrition promotion program to local primary school students have made us appreciate our nutrition knowledge and health promotion skills learnt in SP. We are tremendously thankful for professors who have guided us during our whole internship and for our lecturers who made this amazing journey with Curtin University possible.”

In support of World Diabetes Day, DNHW and DFST students planned and conducted fun nutrition-related activities for members of the public. The event was held at Suntec City Convention Centre on 13 November 2016 and officiated by the Minister of Health, Mr Gan Kim Yong.

In support of Diabetes Awareness Day, 13 DNHW and DFST students led residents on a Healthy Food Trail at Kampong Glam Community Club on 1 Oct 2016. Following a talk by doctors from the National Healthcare Group, students shared with the event participants tips on choosing healthier options when purchasing food. It was a fun session for all.

DNHW Year 3 students planned and executed two successful health events in collaboration with Nutriville on 29 July 2016. They shared with the senior residents at Thye Hua Kwan Cluster Support on how to reduce sodium in their diets. They also organised games related to healthy eating and led the participants at the Pacific Activity Centre (Fajar Spring) in exercises to strengthen their muscles.

Li Shan, Clarissa and Melissa will be pursuing the dietetics degree overseas while Petrina will be undergoing a degree in physiotherapy locally.

DNHW students volunteered at the Clementi Wellness Carnival on 19 June 2016. The students shared with the residents about the Health Promotion Board's My Healthy Plate and on how to read nutrition labels. They also interacted with Dr Tan Wu Meng, Advisor to Jurong GRC GROs (Clementi).

DNHW students attended a talk by Dr Ann Sebren on 'Social Determinants of Obesity and Mechanism of Stress' on 13 April 2016. Dr Sebren is from the School of Nutrition and Health Promotion at Arizona State University.

DNHW Year 3 students’ final end of the semester gathering on 19 Feb 2016. United as one, no matter rain or shine!

2015 Highlights

34 DFST and DHNW students visited farms and factories of CP Group as well as a local university to learn more about food processing and food safety during their 12-day overseas immersion programme (OIP) to Thailand.

About 40 DNHW students volunteered at the "PAy It Forward" event held on 10 October 2015 at Kampong Glam Community Centre. The half-day event saw approximately 1000 needy residents from the Jalan Besar GRC participating in the activities, where they benefited from the enthusiastic sharing by students about nutrition labels.

Danielle, Ying Jie and Ting Fang will be pursuing their undergraduate studies in physiotherapy, nursing and dietetics respectively.

DNHW students taking part in Ren Ci Community Hospital and Nursing Home’s SG50 celebrations in creating the largest National Flag made of thumbprints. The field visit enable students to learn more about health and ageing.

Congratulations to Amanda Chia!
Amanda tops the Diploma in Nutrition, Health and Wellness Year 2015 graduating cohort and has won the prestigious Toh Chin Chye Gold Medal.
She is accepted to read Medicine at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.

2014 Highlights

Nine DNHW students took part in the annual World Osteoporosis Day 2014 Public Forum event at Yuhua Community Centre (CC) on 22 Nov 2014. The students taught Yuhua CC members on nutrition and bone health through a series of interactive activities. They also interacted with Mrs Grace Fu, advisor to Yuhua GROs.

In conjunction with the World Osteoporosis Day celebration, DNHW students and an alumnus had a successful collaboration with Osteoporosis Society of Singapore to teach simple exercises to retain muscle tone and prevent falls to 100 participants from the elderly population of Bethesda Church in Chai Chee on 29 September 2014.

Forty Year 1 DNHW students planned and executed two successful health events in collaboration with Bukit Timah and Bukit Batok Community Centres on 13 and 20 September 2014, respectively. The students shared with the senior residents about healthy eating and taught them how to do simple exercises.

DNHW students gave back to their alma maters by teaching about healthy eating and use of fresh foods for health and beauty. The events took place in Jurong West Secondary School and North Vista Secondary School on 11 and 30 September, respectively.

Six DNHW graduates brought honour and pride to the course at the Ministry of Health Healthcare Scholarships Award Ceremony on 30 July 2014 at Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel.

Year 3 DNHW Nutrition and Dietetics option students taught the senior citizens at Yio Chu Kang Community Centre to create flowers from recycled plastic bags on 24 July 2014. This activity helped to promote social and mental health among the senior citizens.
