Overview

All full-time SP students may learn another language outside of curriculum time. Students may opt for modules in the languages listed below, which are offered on a yearly or half-yearly basis.

The courses below are offered by the School of Communication, Arts & Social Sciences:

 
Survival Japanese (new)
Course Description

This module introduces you to the Japanese language, culture and etiquette. Emphasis will be given to learning key spoken expressions, basic conversations and cultural practices used in different settings and situations. It is ideal for those who have no prior knowledge of the Japanese language, and are visiting Japan for the first time, either for study or work.

  • Onsen & ryokan etiquette
  • Giving & accepting gifts
Length of Course 30 hours between 8-17 June, 2015.
Japanese
Course Description

This module introduces you to the Japanese language and it use in everyday situations. Emphasis will be given to developing your speaking and listening skills to communicate in simple Japanese. You will be able to identify the different systems in Japanese writing, read elementary Japanese texts and write short notes and letters. You may take an external public examination - the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) - after 180 hours of the course.

Length of Course 60 hours (2-hour lessons each week for 30 weeks over two semesters)
Korean
Course Description This module introduces you to the Korean Language in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. It will enable you to communicate in Korean in everyday situations. Besides acquiring the language skills, you will be exposed to some aspects of Korean culture.
Length of Course 60 hours (2-hour lessons each week for 30 weeks over two semesters)
Chinese
Course Description

This module aims to introduce non-Chinese-speaking students to the Chinese language and culture. While emphasis is given to oral skills, recognition of the Chinese script will also be taught. The module will enable you to communicate in everyday situations, and to read and write simple texts.

Length of Course

60 hours (2-hour lessons each week for 30 weeks over two semesters)

Conversational Bahasa
Course Description This module introduces you to Bahasa in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. It will enable you to communicate in Bahasa in everyday situations. Besides acquiring the language skills, you will be exposed to some aspects of Malaysian and Indonesian culture.
Length of Course 30 hours (2-hour lessons each week for one semester)
Conversational Thai
Course Description This module introduces you to the Thai Language in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. It will enable you to communicate in Thai in everyday situations. Besides acquiring the language skills, you will be exposed to some aspects of Thai culture.
Length of Course 30 hours (2-hour lessons each week for one semester)
French
Course Description

This module aims to develop your listening and speaking ability, to enable you to use simple French to communicate in everyday situations. Although the module emphasizes oral communication, some basic reading and writing skills are taught too. At the end of three years of study, you should be able to take the first unit of the Diplome d'Etudes de Langue Francaise (DELF) which is awarded by the French Ministry of Education.

German
Course Description This module introduces you to the German Language in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. It will enable you to communicate in German in everyday situations. Besides acquiring the language skills, you will be exposed to some aspects of German culture.

Spanish
Course Description

This module introduces you to the Spanish Language in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. It will enable you to communicate in Spanish in everyday situations. Besides acquiring the language skills, you will be exposed to some aspects of Spanish culture.
