Overview

All full-time SP students may learn another language outside of curriculum time. Students may opt for modules in the languages listed below, which are offered on a yearly or half-yearly basis.

The courses below are offered by the School of Communication, Arts & Social Sciences:

Chinese
Course Description This module aims to introduce non-Chinese-speaking students to the Chinese language and culture. While emphasis is given to oral skills, recognition of the Chinese script will also be taught. The module will enable you to communicate in everyday situations, and to read and write simple texts.
Length of Course 60 hours (2-hour lessons each week for 30 weeks over two semesters)
French
Course Description This module aims to develop your listening and speaking ability, to enable you to use simple French to communicate in everyday situations. Although the module emphasizes oral communication, some basic reading and writing skills are taught too. At the end of three years of study, you should be able to take the first unit of the Diplome d'Etudes de Langue Francaise (DELF) which is awarded by the French Ministry of Education.
Length of Course 60 hours (2-hour lessons each week for 30 weeks over two semesters)
Japanese
Course Description This module introduces you to the Japanese language and it use in everyday situations. Emphasis will be given to developing your speaking and listening skills to communicate in simple Japanese. You will be able to identify the different systems in Japanese writing, read elementary Japanese texts and write short notes and letters. You may take an external public examination - the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) - after 180 hours of the course.

Korean
Course Description This module introduces you to the Korean Language in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. It will enable you to communicate in Korean in everyday situations. Besides acquiring the language skills, you will be exposed to some aspects of Korean culture.
Length of Course 60 hours (2-hour lessons each week for 30 weeks over two semesters)
Spanish
Course Description This module introduces you to the Spanish Language in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. It will enable you to communicate in Spanish in everyday situations. Besides acquiring the language skills, you will be exposed to some aspects of Spanish culture.
Length of Course 60 hours (2-hour lessons each week for 30 weeks over 2 semesters)
Business Chinese
Course Description Do you have Chinese Language proficiency at 'O' Level? This module further develops your language skills to prepare you for work in a Chinese-speaking environment.
Length of Course 30 hours (2-hour lessons each week for one semester)
Conversational Bahasa
Course Description This module introduces you to Bahasa in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. It will enable you to communicate in Bahasa in everyday situations. Besides acquiring the language skills, you will be exposed to some aspects of Malaysian and Indonesian culture.
Length of Course 30 hours (2-hour lessons each week for one semester)
Conversational Thai
Course Description This module introduces you to the Thai Language in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. It will enable you to communicate in Thai in everyday situations. Besides acquiring the language skills, you will be exposed to some aspects of Thai culture.
Length of Course 30 hours (2-hour lessons each week for one semester)
Conversational Vietnamese
Course Description This module introduces you to the Vietnamese Language in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. It will enable you to communicate in Vietnamese in everyday situations. Besides acquiring the language skills, you will be exposed to some aspects of Vietnamese culture.
Length of Course 30 hours (2-hour lessons each week for one semester)
