School of Chemical & Life Sciences

Director's Welcome

CLS Director

A warm welcome to the School of Chemical & Life Sciences (CLS) at Singapore Polytechnic (SP)!

Our School has more than 45 years of history having started as the Division of Rubber & Plastics back in 1965. Over the years, CLS has grown significantly in terms of number of courses offered, staff strength, student intake and facilities. The long history has allowed our courses to mature into quality programmes well recognised by industry and universities - both local and worldwide.

Explore our website and I'm sure you'll discover we have an environment highly conducive for teaching and learning, applied R&D as well as personal development.

All our full-time (Diploma) and part-time (Advanced/Specialist Diploma) courses feature a blend of theory with good hands-on training, being conducted by more than 100 well qualified and experienced academic staff. These courses are also supported by an extensive array of more than 50 laboratories and workshops run by a team of more than 40 dedicated technical support officers. Of late, we are pleased to be able to partner reputable overseas institutions in offering upgrading programmes within SP campus like Optometry degree with University of Manchester (UK) and Chemical Engineering degree with Technical University of Munich, TUM (Germany).

Our active approach to learning complemented with e-learning, CDIO-based learning and Inquiry/Problem-based learning (PBL) for selected courses; modules; field trips; industry-linked student projects and industrial attachment, serves well to equip CLS students with a variety of 21st Century skills to meet industry needs.

Life at CLS is indeed colourful and exciting – from daily lectures, small tutorial groups, practical sessions and self-directed learning, to a wide selection of co-curricular activities and participation in competitions, community projects and academic/company internships – all of which present opportunities to build character, and groom an inclination for design thinking-based creativity, innovation and enterprise.

Incidentally, CLS is well known for its commercialised products – Pokka Lemonsi Delight drink, Elder-flower tea, Romancing Singapore perfumes, SP twin-ply noodles, Yamie rice, Inulin-infused chocolates, Healthy XO kaya, etc. – just to name a few. In recent years, our school has also spun off a few Technology Centres of Innovation like the Food Innovation & Resource Centre (FIRC), Advanced Materials Technology Centre (AMTC) and Centre for Biomedical & Life Sciences (CBLS). So, whether you are a prospective student waiting to embark on your journey on Applied Research & Development (R&D) or a company seeking new ways to improve a particular product or service, do contact us so that we can be your partner on that journey.

You are most welcome to visit our premises and experience the vibrant and creative teaching and learning atmosphere first-hand. Join any of our courses and watch yourself transform into a professional for the chemical and life science world.
