Food, Heath & Materials @ Cambodia

Cambodia-bound students and staff gathered at Changi Airport prior to departure

Between 15-30 March 2012, thirty Food Science & Technology, Nutrition Health & Wellness and Materials Science students from the School of Chemical & Life Sciences, together with their lecturers, embarked on a community service trip to Cambodia. This project was done in collaboration with YMCA International Service Programmes.

The beneficiaries were children from an orphanage called Unaccompanied Association (UNACAS). Located at Lechwat Village in Kandal Province, this orphanage is home to almost 100 children, the majority of whom are either orphans, abused children or those hailing from single parent families.

While there, the volunteers conducted English lessons through drama, songs and games and helped to refurbish the kitchen of the orphanage which prepares meals for 120 people daily. Refurbishment of the kitchen involved manual tasks such as replacing the floor and installation of cupboards in which skilled workers were employed to work alongside the student volunteers.

The team also assisted a mobile medical clinic to conduct health screening for residents. They also had the opportunity to help in a rice-soup feeding programme at Siem Reap. This gave them an opportunity to interact with children from poor families who depended on the Centre for free meals.

This service learning program provided opportunities for our volunteers to develop their character and leadership skills, along with a sense of responsibility and compassion for the needy.
